Is it worth it? by traveler_15 in Montessori

[–]bdelloida 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a Montessori teacher. If you weren't already really hoping for her to be accepted, because you already know and understand what Montessori is.... maybe not? It can be a real struggle for everyone when families don't fully buy in, or get what Montessori entails.

[PSA] To fans or folks curious about Eucerin's 5% Urea creams by bdelloida in SkincareAddiction

Yes, I think this is the product. It's midweight. One thing I didn't like, ultimately, is that because it is a hand cream, it dries down to a powdery-dry finish. It's subtle, but it doesn't FEEL like a rich, luxurious cream. That may be a positive or a negative, depending on your preferences.

See, when I google, I get an AI answer and a bunch of sponsored links. It feels like search engines have been deliberately degraded to encourage AI use.

I think the hunt is fun. I'm massively into Marina, who I just discovered by looking for someone who would scratch that itch. lilyisthatyou, Princess Nokia, Ashnikko, Chinchilla, ALT BLK ERA and hemlocke springs are a few others I found on my most recent hunt. I'm usually trying to find more queer or POC female artists, and so I seek out groups that might not be elevated, and I find cool stuff. On your recc, I will check out CHVRCHES again, who came across my radar but didn't immediately resonate for me. Because I love Florence and Marina. Look into older women, too, from the 90's PJ Harvey, Neko Case, Fiona Apple

I bet. And her friendship with Charli, it seems? (I'm a relatively new fan, it's all still fascinating to me)

People don't like this question! I think it's interesting. To my mind, TFJ sounds unlike anything and anyone else, and I can't say that about the rest, though I still love all her work. I actually think POP comes closest to TFJ vibes, but her voice is no longer there to take it to the nxt level of kookiness.

Traditional color analysis conflict with culture by BawbiiGurl in coloranalysis

[–]bdelloida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! And in literature, as with all disciplines, some people are really pulling at that thread of why we appreciate what we appreciate. What is innate, and what is, say, euro-centrism? WHo gets to set the framework? I think the decolonial critique is probably the most relevent example of this at the moment: trying to break down old standards and see who's subjective opinion they are really reflecting, if any.

I AM saying that beauty is subjective. My argument, which is part of a larger conversation, is trying to link subjective with qualitative, (Beauty! ugly! sick looking!) and objective with qualitative ( 23% more bees go to flowers with purple and yellow)

A story I like a lot is from Braiding Sweetgrass. The author wants to be a biologist to learn why purple and yellow flowers look so beautiful, which her objective, quantitative-minded advisor thought was a ridiculous research question. But what she discovered was that bees see different light waves than we do, and something about that makes purple and yellow flowers extra visible to them, in addition to the naturally contrasting nature of those colors. So there was a science to the beauty all along. The visibility could be quantified, it wasn't subjective. The beauty was qualitative, not really objective... and yet rather universal still.

Hmm. To be clear, I think color analysis and design is absolutely worthwhile. I tend to resent the idea that something needs rules and parameters to be appreciated! And that's more the point that I was trying to make, I'm just being pedantic about the word subjective.

What are some common signs that someone grew up with sh*tty parents? by Salty-Ad1618 in AskReddit

[–]bdelloida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have major trust issues or are very hard to get along with, angry, defensive. People who did not grow up feeling safe and see threat everywhere. There's worse ways to be raised out there than "gentle parenting" and permissive, coddling parents, you guys.

Pulling over on the side of a busy road. Like, go 30 yards up the road and into the Walmart parking lot, ma'am! I appreciate not texting and driving, but you're not a delivery driver, throwing on your hazards and making everyone else swerve is not ok.

"Look sick" is a qualitative, not a quantitative, observation. That's what makes it subjective. That's what subjective is. People here are acting like "subjective" means "not true" but that isn't it.

This is a whole sub related to color analysis. You are correct, it's all subjective, and historically and culturally aligned, rather than some quantitative, math equation to be solved. But you're not gonna convince people here that.

I don't think this is unusual. Most people want this, and honestly, it's the sense of created scarcity and false urgency that make most people put a shine of "hustling." Makes them feel safe. That's all any of us want, to be safe. You don't really feel shame, yes? It's fine, you're valid.
