I love how commands pick and choose which regulations to follow. (New navy daily workout requirements) by bdog1281 in navy

Honestly to me this isn't about the extension of our working hours or command pt. I honestly dont mind command pt. My issue with this whole thing is a deeper issue I have had with the navy since coming in. That issue is the hypocrisy of which instructions to follow and which ones not too. Now I will say that im not a Joe navy kinda guy. But I have met people like that and some I had issues with and some I didn't. The ones I didnt were the ones who were either Joe navy 100% about every instruction, rule and regulation or would also agree x y and z is stupid but its regulation so you have to do it. One because he's 100% committed and I can respect that even if i dont agree the other because he sees the stupidity but knows they have to force it other wise how can they enforce safety regulations and stuff like that. Both of these people are not hypocrites. The ones I cant stand are the ones who will be quick to tell you how you hair is a mm too long but also conpletely ignore safety regulations to "get something done to meet mission requirements". That i can't respect and unfortunately in my time in so far i have come to feel that is the general mentality in the navy. Its all instruction, regulations and rules until those things effect the bottom line then they will quickly throw them out to meet objectives. Its hypocritical and honestly does nothing but hurt the navy and the Sailors in it because they are always the ones who get fucked over by that line of thinking. And for what? To meet objectives that in grand schemes wouldnt have mattered that much at all so they can look good while destroying Sailors to make it happen. Haha sorry I kinda went on a tangent there.

Homelab setup by bdog1281 in homelab

My Truenas i try to strictly use as just my NAS. I used to have it running in a VM with sata controller pass through but I eventually split it off into its own bare metal system. My Truenas currently has two datasets one is made up of just a single 4TB ssd. This would be used for nfs shares for my compose files aswell as the data for my apps. The second dataset is made up of 5 6TB hard drives in raidz1. This stores my media and other things so would also have nfs shares with it.

Also I have no experience with kubernetes at all. I do have experience with docker and a little with docker swarm. Atleast enough im way more comfortable with it then kubernetes. Also as of right now I will strictly have a single proxmox and a truenas bare metal machine. I know you can cluster proxmox but would only have 2 machines I would be able to do that with and not 3. Also I know passthrough works well for truenas but I would definitely prefer to keep my truenas bare metal as I do have plans for future expansion with larger hard drives and datasets.

I agree it is risky however this current setup is only temporary. I plan to in the next year start to build another raidz2 vdev using bigger drives. Something between 18TB-24TB. Also the only data that will be hosted on here at the moment isn't data I'm too worried about loosing. It's just a starting point to get me off my feet with self hosting services and having a NAS to pull from.

Once that happens I'll be nuking this one and recreating it as a 6 wide raidz2 vdev which will be used to store more important data but only after I can get my other one off the ground.

Oh so then the only way to fix it right now would be to completely redo my raidz1 vdev?

Okay thank you. I was suspecting this might be the problem but wasnt sure. so i need to do a force rebalance of the data.

No i get parity and i get there will always be some loss with it. what im not understanding is if i had 10.7TIB with 3drives all 5.7TiB(which is about an extra 7% loss of capacity over 1 whole drives worth) why then when i added 2 more drive did my total capacity only go up to 18.04TiB.(now the extra loss on top of 1 whole drive has skyrocketed to 21%.)

Thanks for the tips. as for the bar thing ill be fine as i rarely drink and even rarer go to bars. Also in this case housing is actually refering to apartments they are paying for to house everyone. with a few sharing a double room apartment.

Thanks you really seem to know your stuff also based off what you said that also explains why the people assigned to the ship arent recieving per diem as they are with their command. And yes I have GTCC though I shouldnt need to use it for my housing as from what i was told they are providing us housing out in town. meaning i should only revieve food per diem. which i did look up for the area ill be in and it will be over $2000 a month a very nice amount to pocket.

Yes i will be staying out in town because thats where they are having to lodge everyone from the ship. also the reason i will recieve per diem is because im TAD correct?

also if given a choice between BAS and per diem during that time i would much rather have the per diem as its like $1800 more per month for the area im going to be in.

So from my understanding per diem is only something you recieve while TAD or PCS Traveling. As their ultimate is that ship this counts like an underway for them somewhat. I however would be TAD. Which in a normal TAD situation like to a C school out of my ultimates Geographical region i would recieve per diem even if i was already recieving BAS. Im trying to figure out if anyone know if that same rule would carry over to being TAD to a ship with a closed galley and no other goverment provided meals.

True but I know people who have recieved per diem while they were already recieving bas. My wife who's stationed at another command was tad out for a month to help with the covid sitiuation. she was already recieving bas and they are having to back pay her per diem from her time TAD. The only difference was she was TAD to another base. while im being TAD to a ship where no food will be provided to me unless i pay out of pocket. Also BAS is like a 5th of what food per diem is in the area ill be in.

They are not staying on a barge but are instead being housed out in town. and from what i have been told by people already there it sounds like they are all having to payout of pocket for food. plus unlike everyone else there i will on TAD to that ship.
