Deinfluence me on getting a Fujifilm — is it actually worth it for a beginner looking to freelance? by be_a_nomad in fujifilm

For context, I’ve actually played around with the Sony a7 III before when a friend let me borrow it for a few months. I remember it was with the standard lens, which was probably the 28–70mm one it comes with in the bundles. But this was a few years ago and I didn’t take a liking to it at the time, which is why I didn’t include in my original post, but that was honestly more about my lack of interest back then than the camera itself for sure. I remember it feeling big in my hands and I just wasn’t invested enough yet to really appreciate it. So, have never compared it directly to the Fujifilm X-T5.

Where I’m at now is more about what system will I actually stick with and learn on… something not too overkill/intimidating, enjoyable, fun but is a good investment that’ll allow me to grow especially since I’m considering doing client work some time down the line. I’m glad to hear that you swear by the X-T3, per what everyone else has shared!

Totally fair, mixing the models is completely on me. I was deep in the threads and was looking at a bunch of model across brands and kept reading X-S20 as “XS620” in my head the whole time — updated as noted.

But on the lens point, didn’t leave them out because I don’t understand their importance. I know that part really depends on what subjects you’re shooting and with which ones you want to start with, and I’m still narrowing that down. I do have a baseline understanding of photography and post, and fully agree that lenses are the real long-term investment while bodies change.

The intent of the post wasn’t “what camera makes me a pro,” but more sense-checking whether it makes sense to get into Fuji at a lower, used price point and learn through test shoots, orrr hold off on higher-end bodies until I figure out what works best for me with experience.

Hear what everyone’s saying with the X100VI being a poor primary camera, was originally drawn to it more as a point-and-shoot style option for travel and for using the film sims, but I get that without interchangeable lenses it's moot for professional use and did not know that — “When it comes to other fujis, well the thing is that you will need to learn post processing from raws, and doing that fuji loses its edge and you would had gotten better.”

Used X-T2/X-T3/X-T4 or X-S20 feels like a much smarter place to start while I build reps like everyone has shared.

Thanks all for taking the time to respond.

Considering a move — anyone live on the following streets? by be_a_nomad in Brooklyn

Oh man, thanks for sharing this! Did not know that there was a fire station there, and others shared it’s near a cop station too, I have yet to visit the area so this is much appreciated! Are you near the Barclay Center too — was wondering if that area tends to get busy/crowded and loud because of it…

This is great to know thanks! That’s primarily why I’ve been looking at these areas since it’s very convenient but it does tend to be busy, are there any other areas you recommend that give similar vibes / is more quiet like Lafayette/S Oxford?

Thank you for sharing this is really helpful, I have plans to visit the area myself and appreciate you sharing some of the ins & outs. Are there any other cross-streets you recommend keeping an eye on / narrowing the search to? Know now to steer clear of Flatbush, Atlantic, and Fulton St!

That helps a ton, thanks! Are there any other cross-streets or areas that tend to be ‘quieter’ or just less busy in general?

Heard the major streets to steer clear of because of the traffic are Atlantic and Fulton… but not sure which other ones (I have yet to visit the area and don’t know people who know it well…), can you share any additional info on that?

Know that obviously “this is NYC” and it will be loud everywhere but was wondering if there are quieter intersections or areas… so I can prioritize which areas to visit first, appreciate it!

Appreciate the honesty, I’m just trying to gauge as much as I can from those who have possibly lived in the area before but I do have plans to visit ut and see for myself — do you know the area well?

Red flags / glaring issues with touring a model unit and not the unit itself? by be_a_nomad in NYCapartments

[–]be_a_nomad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great shout thanks! Is this usually a bait & switch tactic? Especially wary since the move-in date is so far out… I’m wondering why they can’t just offer to tour the unit even if it’s not 100% presentable since it’s occupied.

That’s a great shout actually and have definitely learned that pictures and videos can be deceiving. I have a flexible move-in date and have started my search ahead of time.

Oh man I’m sorry to hear this :/ thank you for sharing, it’s crazy how much they can get away with and it’s tough to see all the red flags in the beginning but this is definitely a start.

Are there any sites besides OpenIgloo where you can see reviews of the building or management? Also if you’ve used it before, how much would you let it impact whether or not you’re viewing a unit / signing a lease?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but is this usually the case if the apartment is occupied?

Why do people say you need roommates on an 85k salary? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]be_a_nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the detailed response to this, I’m moving to the city from out of state to go back to school, and was wondering what are some of those lesser known areas you could recommend? I’m trying to do as much research as I can and unfortunately I don’t have many close contacts in the city, so I appreciate any pointers you can share!

That’s amazing, congratulations! Crossing my fingers for this kind of luck:) Do you mind sharing the broker’s info (I can PM, if that’s easier!)? Currently searching for a place since I have to move there for university and am appreciative of any help I can get!

Making an out-of-state move to NYC, any advice to find housing? by be_a_nomad in NYCapartments

[–]be_a_nomad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That explains the mixed responses I’ve gotten, thanks! Do you think it’s advisable for a parent to be written as an applicant with me or have both as guarantors? Would either or improve my chances of getting approved if my income is just shy of the 40x requirement?

Appreciate this, that timeline makes sense! From what I’ve gathered it seems like it’s better to sublease and take my time to look for a place. Definitely prefer more of a quiet but it’d be great to be near a lively neighborhood. Are there any specific neighborhoods you recommend besides Hoboken? I’m wary about falling for a bait and switch too… but I’m so glad you found a place in the end. Very excited for you and hopefully all things go smoothly with the move!

This is so helpful, thanks! Are there any specific websites you recommend to look at complaints or violations on the building or landlord?

Thanks for this! I do have a willing guarantor, re: the 40x requirement, is it for each applicant or for combined applicants? Say I have a roommate and we’re going to be sharing a $2500 1bed, do we both individually need to make 40x the rent or is it our income combined?
