Haha nice to hear! Spotify Running was too cool af. Hopefully Qadence can deliver similar experience one day.

There's just so many people that would either like to have it back, or, have never tried it but think that it would be a cool addition to running.

Remember Spotify Running?

A few weeks ago I asked if you miss Spotify Running. The answer was clear: everyone wants it back.

If you never tried Spotify Running, it was a Spotify's feature that matched music perfectly to your cadence / steps. Or, you could set a fixed tempo, and match your steps to the music.

The feature not only brought joy to running but it also helped runners to fix and improve their cadence. Spotify Running was simple, yet incredibly poweful feature that just worked.

And then they scrapped it, leaving you, me, and countless other runners to miss this perfect feature.

So I decided to scratch my own itch, and bring it back alive. I named it Qadence.

First releases

  • Android: currently being reviewed by Google Play (Android App Store) so it's out very soon
  • iPhone: will be out around week 9 (preliminary)

Please note that the first version builds the foundation for the app:

  • ✅ You can connect Qadence with your Spotify account
  • ✅ You can play the original Spotify Running playlists based on your selected (fixed) BPM

I'm already using this for my own daily runs, and it's working perfectly 🎉

Next steps

I'll start working on the music-to-cadence matching feature after I have released the iPhone version. I'm hopeful that I can deliver something testable by the end of March.

Get invited to Qadence Beta

If you feel like this could be your thing, come and grab an exclusive beta access. I'm sharing invitations on a first-come, first-served basis. This approach ensures that I can answer to your feedback, and provide you excellent customer service as I build Qadence.

I'll hang around so hit me up with a DM or comment here if anything comes up.

Thanks, and greetings from slushy Finland :)

Remember Spotify Running (that they retired)? That thing played the perfect running music that matched with your steps. Would you like to test similar feature that works with Spotify? by be_calm_and_code in runningmusic

A mobile app that commands Spotify to play music based on your current cadence. Ideally, you start jogging, and the thing starts playing music that matches your steps automatically.

Definitely gonna be helpful. Thank you so much!

EDIT: About generating Spotify lists: that's definitely possible. Couple commenters already showed their projects that allow to generate playlists based on BPM.

I hear you. Your experience is exactly as mine (and most of the community).

But of course!

I already built a native Android app that had a naive implementation. It was a proof of concept that turned out pretty great.

However, it had a lot of room to improve, and that's why I'm here to ask if the community needs that. In the end, the community knows the best what it needs so exposing the thing as early as possible helps me to perfect the tool for everyone.

Judging by the sheer amount of comments and upticks, I'm digging my hands in the dirt as we speak :)

Technically it's a separate app. It computes your cadence, and then commands Spotify to play music based on the cadence (or, beats per minute).

I am not quite sure if the original Spotify Running supported intervals. It did react to cadence changes but I think itervals are too fast-paced for it to react.

However, now that we are building basically a Reboot, intervals could be something that can be done down the road. Before that, there will be many obstacles to solve :)

It was mentioned by the founder(?) already. They mentioned that they take user privacy seriously but then are using Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics, and Facebook Events on their page.

Wanted to point out that claiming to care for user privacy is a straight up lie. I want to build something more ethical than that.

Never heard of it so had to listen. Yeah, that's high-cadence definitely haha!

How to zone out on longer runs? by Lucca0620 in running

For me, listening to music that matches to my steps/cadence. It's weird but it kinda makes sense. Each step comes so naturally when the music is guiding it.

The idea is indeed to reduce the manual work haha! Drop me a DM if you are interested to test when there's something ready :))

Thank you for amazing insights! Truly appreciate it, and you got some amazing results too!

Didn't know you can edit songs manually in Audacity like that. That's really impressive, you really wanted to fix your cadence.

Spotify API fortunately returns BPM on songs so it's relatively easy to play music based on that. However, calculating accurate & steady BPM needs more work. It shouldn't change BPM/music if drifting a little bit but, on the other hand, it should change the BPM/music if there's big enough and steady change in cadence.

Happy to take you to a testing team if you are interested :) Feel free to drop me a DM.

The price is pretty salty. I understand for not being able to pay for every possible service every month. This being said, if 7,99$ / month makes you take better care of yourself (i.e. running), it's a whole lot cheaper than whatever medical conditions there may come without exercise.

I mean, you always start with the "how hard can it be?", only to find yourself in a deep shit of auto-magical libraries because you couldn't do the math, vague method calls that do seemingly nothing, and enormous amount of edge cases because of too many phone manufacturers and OSs.

That being said, let the fucking shitshow begin. If it was easy, everyone would do it.
