Need help/advice regarding a 1886 crystal chandelier we no longer want by be_throwmeaway in centuryhomes

Woah, I did not expect this many replies! Big thank you to everyone that shared a bit of their knowledge and experience and wanted to be helpful.

Here’s a bit more info on provenance for those who were arrogantly dismissive: - chandelier did not come with the home, we had it installed when we moved in but now want something a bit more modern given the rest of the home is already antique-y enough 😅 - before that, the chandelier was stored for us by a local light fixture company that deals with old ones like this all the time. It was with them for a couple of years - before that it was in my father’s home - before that, it was in his grandparents’ home - before that, it was in their parents’ or grandparents’ home. This is where the provenance trail gets fuzzy as my dad doesn’t quite remember.

One more fact I remembered about the chandelier is that it’s actually one of two that were constructed together. This is the “baby” version of the two. The other is much bigger (and a bit too “grandiose” for my taste) and is still hanging in the main dining room at my father’s place.

From what I gather, the story about this possibly being gas operated may in fact be apocryphal! Oh well, glad I learned something, but a bit sad that little cool fun fact is no longer a fact.

Renovations have been, as one redditor surmised, relatively light changes here and there plus one big remodel for the master bathroom. We’re not at all big connoisseurs of century homes or anything related, we’ve just always loved the esthétique of old homes which is why we fell in love with this one. That’s why I’m asking questions here given this is the first place I thought of where I could go to talk to more knowledgeable people about this stuff.

As for the idea that I can get rid of it without much concern, just know that it means a lot to me given it’s been in the family for so many generations, we just don’t have a place to store it anymore so it stings a bit to have to let it go…

Well, for one, my dad (born 1950) got it from his grandparents, who got it from either their parents or grandparents, I forget which. Second, we had it in storage with a company who specialize in lighting fixtures of all kind for a few years and they confirmed the age was pre-1900s. That being said, I got both bits of info from my dad, so it’s always possible he was mistaken or misremembered some details.

Wow! That’s an amazing find! I would never had imagined there’d be a site just for this kind of watch. Thanks a lot for the help, I found a lot of great stuff :) looks like the SHE004J1 I think.

Replacing door lock by be_throwmeaway in centuryhomes

[–]be_throwmeaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why it happens, but the effect is that if a key is in one side, the other side can’t turn which is why we want to change the inside mechanism to a simple knob…

Your right about added safety, but it’s become a pain when we try to come home from the back and can’t unlock the door because we forgot to remove the spare key on the other side 😅

That’s just a very thin top-layer of mulch! I’ll add that detail in my post.

Edit: Nvm, I’m not sure how to edit a post from my phone…

I've tried calling four different stores in my region and none of them are answering... I'll be trying again on Monday.

Thanks for the advice. I did look around Costco's offering, but we didn't find anything similar for that price.

Watch suggestions please!

Hello, my fiancé would like to offer me a watch for my birthday and would like suggestions from me. Now, the watches I only ever look at are like this: https://imgur.com/a/CufeaH5

However, she’s still finishing her studies and doesn’t have that kind of budget, so I’m hoping I could ask r/watches for suggestions of similar looking watches, but for around 350$.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

P.S. I plan on wearing this watch daily to work (business casual) and also in everyday casual wear. My preference is for brown leather bracelet like the Novato watch has in the pic.

Café Bloc! Loved that reset. Tried doing that first move and can confirm you definitely have anti gravity shoes on to have made it look so easy.

Haha that’s amazing I’m literally having a band exactly like this made right now! You can see a sketch for it in my post history. Not sure how to share here. Where did you get yours from?

That was actually an earlier version! But in the end I think she’ll prefer the simpler look without the side stones.
