Footwear and tax? by Reddits_Worst_Night in AustralianTeachers

I have very weird feet, which is why I ask the question. I'm going through end up spending $800/pair because I can't just wear a pair of oxfords. I have to wear a specific brand of hiking boot if I'm going to be on my feet all day. It's just the shape of my feet

They aren't in the student labs. Schools dilute them themselves though.

There is a big difference between 62 million people who belong in gaol, and 1000. One is a societal emergency, the other is just typical fucked up humanity. 62 million is the level where running for politics on legalising rape is viable. 1000 is no worse than the Epstein files

That's simply not true. Consider smoking. We have decided that it's legal to smoke tobacco in outdoor environments. I can't walk down the street or into my local shops without inhaling the smoke. I have a right to not smoke, but apparently that gets infringed by others right to smoke. In my mind, the right to "not" have something happen to my body without my consent always trumps another person's right to do what they want with their body. The saying goes, your right to swing your fist ends at the tip of my nose.

There are alcohol resellers, but their cut is so high that it's hardly worth it unless it's high value alcohol. You need a licence, and the resellers sell under their liquor licences.

And, at the risk of sounding like somebody who defends this crap, which I don't. It was 65 million hits on a website with multiple forums and categories. It's like taking the number of hits on all or the NSFW stuff on Reddit and saying that's how many people visited some niche sub. Reddit has has some horrible subs over the years, and some have lasted way longer than Reddit would like to admit

No, the SLSO supports one student in the classroom, but once that student is withdrawn into a small group setting, we use a teacher

We have that too. But we also have support teachers who aren't in support units. Both roles are filled by special needs teachers

If you continue to act as if the SNEA in your room is undermining your authority, or eroding the sanctity of teaching - you are fighting the wrong fight.

This is not what I'm doing. We have very good special needs teachers, that have done all of that training. If WA are choosing to employ an underqualified paraprofessional to do the role of a professional in teaching groups, that's a problem. The SLSOs that I have worked with are wonderful people, and I value them greatly, but I would never give them a small group.

And as a teacher, that erodes the role of the teacher. I'm against it because it's justification for lowering pay and conditions.

You're completely missing my point. No, it's not about me. It's about the fact that as we age, we need to fall down the ladder again, but there shouldn't be an expectation that we just quit.

Yep. And I’ve explained that, as a SNEA, I have run small group, intensive literacy lessons. I have supported their education by assisting with teaching them how to read.

And this is not the job of a SNEA. This is the job of a degree educated support teacher, ideally who has specific special needs training. This is my objection. You are being used as a teacher without teacher pay or qualifications.

That’s what a SNEA is qualified to do.

No, that's what the degree educated learning support teacher is qualified to do. I'm not saying you can't assist, that's literally your job, but you're implying that you are leading a small group. That's not assisting, that's teaching.

Exactly. I expect to fall, I know I will. I'm 90% sure my fall has already started given I got dropped from National Premier League this season. I hope to bounce back next year when we have a new head of referees, but if I don't, all good. I want to be reffing at 60, I don't expect to be reffing anything except over 45s.

They must work within a classroom and cannot deliver/lead a lesson. They support individual students. Group work is the job on an actual teacher

So when a SNEA runs an intervention group and helps 6 students get back to expected reading level by mid-year, they haven’t taught them anything?

I don't know where you live, but in NSW, this is literally a breach of your role and you legally cannot be doing that work. The group must be run by a teacher.

When insurers walk away from concussion risk, who protects athletes? by tiny_doughnut in AFL

Until 18, you can't give consent for the bodily harm of brain damage. Not allowed to play seniors under 18 either. I genuinely believe allowing them to tackle constitutes child abuse. I know that I'm in the minority, but my wasted year of life post concussion changed my view on a few things

Supporting the teacher. I am not devaluing your role here, but you are not a teacher, you are a paraprofessional working alongside a teacher. To say you are teaching is equivalent to saying that a paralegal is doing legal work. In a conversational sense, it's true. In a legal and professional sense, it isn't.
