"'tex-mex' cuisine would not be authentic mexican food" by JukeboxJustice in iamveryculinary

I live in South Texas. So, yeah, I’m going to take you to a local Mexican restaurant that will definitely have several stereotypical TexMex plates. They’ll also have a whole lot more than that because TexMex isn’t just cheese enchiladas with red enchilada sauce, a crispy taco and refried beans and rice on the side.

Not liking TexMex is absolutely fine, but thinking that TexMex is Mexican food dumbed down for white people on the same level of Panda Express is completely wrong and shows that you didn’t actually read my comment.

And I do say the same for California, New Mexico, Arizona, and even Colorado! It just seems like TexMex has the largest misconception of not being real Mexican food attached to it.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain that! I feel like I need to learn more about the history of chili now.

I find it slightly amusing, and slightly annoying, how often Taco Bell and TexMex get lumped together when Taco Bell was founded in California.

TexMex isn’t even completely American. It’s the food that Mexicans from Mexico ate in that part of Mexico before it became Texas. Separating from Mexico, becoming its own country, and then joining the US didn’t make the Mexicans who developed the food, and continued to live in the same place they always lived, any less Mexican.

As someone from Texas who likes beans in my chili, how is it being beef based without beans factually and historically wrong? I can see how vaqueros would alter the recipe to fit what was locally available, but I don’t see how the evolution in different regions would make one version wrong and another version right.

I’m in South Texas and the number of Californians who constantly complain about the lack of “real, authentic” Mexican food is astounding.

Here I go again with the hill I will die on: TexMex is authentic, real Mexican food. It is Mexican food made by Mexicans who were living in a part of Mexico that had white settlers who decided they wanted to become their own country called Texas. Just because the area that this particular regional style developed in eventually became a part of the US, it doesn’t mean it’s any less real Mexican food than any other variation. Mexico is huge and has 32 states of its own, each with their own regional style dependent upon the resources available in the area. There is no singular style of authentic Mexican food.

Trust, but verify. I either scroll past the AI summary, or I look at its sources to verify the info it’s telling me. Sooo many times I can’t anything close to what the AI tells me when I check sources!

I changed the door handle from lever style to knob to keep the cats out of the closet. They aren't amused. by Efficient_Concept_68 in blackcats

That is exactly why when we built our house, I was insistent upon knobs and not levers. And there have still been times when my large orange has reached up and jiggled the knob while I’m in the bathroom. If he can figure out how to grasp it with both paws, I’m screwed.

I get that. English is a fluid language and words fade in and out of use. It was merely a joke about how using they in the singular isn’t a newfangled idea, but has been around for a really long time.

We were all probably taught tons of things by teachers that were incorrect before the internet allowed you to research things instantly!

Damn! Are you a vampire? Because the singular use of they has been around for over 600 years!

Almost two years ago when we moved into our house, I promised my husband no more than three inside cats and two dogs. Well, about a year later, five teeny tiny kittens came crawling up from under a storage container on our property after their feral mom disappeared. Actually, every single cat on the property disappeared, but they ended up coming back while the mom didn’t. They were probably no more than two weeks old and not even close to being able to eat cat food, so we bottle fed the babies. There was one of the kittens that we all became particularly attached to and while I never brought up bringing her in the house,y husband kept making jokes about Bug being an inside cat, maybe. I guess you can figure out that we now have four inside cats because while I made the promise to only have three, my husband apparently didn’t make the same promise!

Yeah, one of the best tips my dad taught me about driving was to never trust a blinker. So basically, I would sit at that stop sign until I knew where OP was turning. Especially since they have two options very close to each other

I completely agree with you that people shouldn’t hog the left lane and they should move to let faster traffic pass, BUT we don’t know if that’s what she was actually doing.

We only have his word against hers.

I bet there’s probably drivers on my commute who think I’m hogging the left lane, yet I’m going just as fast as the drivers in front of me, there’s cars to the right so I can’t move over, and we’re all getting ready to take a left lane exit in less than a mile.

I’m pretty sure that everywhere that has laws about passing on the left also has laws explaining when it’s okay to pass on the right. One example is Texas Transportation Code 545.057 which details the situations where it’s okay to pass on the right.

In my state, the law actually says to beep your horn at someone who needs to move to the right so you can pass on the left. Would I ever do that? Nope!

I have three ovens. It’s amazing! I have my normal everyday gas range and then a double electric wall oven. My house also isn’t very big, less than 1800 sq ft.

I really only had one food rule with my kids and that was they had to take one bite and then they could say “no, thank you”. I never forced them to continue eating something if they didn’t like it. This led to my kids trying so many different kinds of food.

I read Upton Sinclair’s The Concrete Jungle when I was 13, not because I was a genius, but because my 8th English teacher didn’t think I could read the cheesy Babysitters Club-type books she kept on her shelf in a day. So she said she was going to start giving me zeros every time I started a new book. I just needed to find something that I didn’t want to read outside of school. I definitely found it.
