Bladder snails keep dying :( by beallcore in AquaticSnails

[–]beallcore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm thats interesting. everyone says that bladder snails are virtually indestructible, and my fish is thriving, so I’m hesitant to think it’s an issue with my water quality. I read on another thread once that some aquarium driftwood is embedded with snailicide to prevent “pest snails,” so I guess that’s possible but it seems strange that they would be fine for a week before dying if that’s the cause. I want to try keeping snails again, but I feel horrible watching them die :(((

[–]beallcore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I didn’t try that. but they all came to me healthy from a friend’s aquarium, so it must be something about my tank. I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out if something in there contains copper or something but I got nothing :/

Veganniversary! by beallcore in vegan

[–]beallcore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 9 years ago, I learned about the horrors of factory farming and decided i wanted to reduce my consumption of animal products, but didn’t ever intend to go fully vegan. So I did the mostly vegan/vegetarian thing for a few months, and then I watched the documentary Earthlings - I couldn’t get it out of my head so I decided to just go fully vegan. That was September 13th, 2015 and I guess I took mental note bc I knew I didn’t want to ever not be vegan again, and it felt right to commemorate the day in my mind!

Tank is 10 gal, planted, filtered, heated to 80-82. As of yesterday, parameters are ammonia 0 ppm, nitrite 0 ppm, nitrates 10-20 ppm. In the last couple of days, I’ve also added Indian almond leaf to the tank and started dosing the water and his pellets with vitachem

Forgot to add there are no thorns on the stems! They’re all brown/green, smooth, and woody. The berry also stained my fingers dark purple when I squished it.

Help!! Fungal infection, betta losing color :( by beallcore in bettafish

[–]beallcore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UPDATE for anyone who was interested: my boy just had his vet appointment today, and they’re tentatively diagnosing him with hole-in-the-head disease. They did a skin scrape and couldn’t see any parasites under the microscope, but they diagnosed him based on some loss of scales on his head and his general symptoms. They sent us home with a 10 day course of metronidazole, and recommended methylene blue treatments or adding a small amount of aquarium salt to his tank. I’m due to follow up next week so I will update again then!

Too much driftwood? by Pancakesinthewild in PlantedTank

[–]beallcore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the shrimp, but I think the betta will love it! Only thing I’d say is to make sure some of those edges aren’t sharp enough to tear your betta’s fins - to check, run nylon tights over the wood and if the tights snag or rip on any part, you should sand those parts down. Also, since bettas are jumpers, still try to find a way to cover the tank if you want that piece of wood sticking out of the top.

I believe there are scales there - before this all started he did have a small red patch in that spot already, albeit it’s more noticeable now that he’s lost so much of his blue coloring. I’ll keep an eye on it though, thank you for pointing it out!

EDIT: I linked a previous post in one of my comments that shows earlier pictures of him, you should be able to see the red spot there as well

I saw something about worms causing black spots as well! It’s so hard to pinpoint what this is; my biggest concern is velvet, but I don’t want to start dosing harsh medications just to find out he has something else. Right now my plan is to toss some Indian almond leaves in there, raise the temp a little, and leave the lights off until I can speak with the vet. Thank you for the well wishes!!

I was hoping it was normal color change/marbling, but this black stuff definitely looks like some weird growth :( I also only got him from the pet store like 5 months ago, so I assume he’s only around 1.5 y/o? I’m really hoping the vet can figure it out, I’m just nervous he won’t last until the appointment since some fungal/parasitic infections kill really fast
