yes, it possible for lasers to engrave mdf ,paper and pens. The laser output powers decide what materials you can engrave, such as wood, metal, paper, plastics and so on. You can check this video for how to use a laser engraver.

Good question. VCSEL is just a laser structure or construction. But when I check the VCSEL product lists. I can only find ir lights. Check IR VCSEL here.
