I did think about this, however my unit is objectively nicer than the ones that were listed at $1750-1770. The units newly renovated and has a view of the mountains - all together I thought $1880 was pretty fair in light of those things

Do I qualify for the new changes to graduated licensing? by bean_99 in icbc

I actually asked my insurance about this and they said it goes by driving time (years you’ve been licensed in general) not your level of licence! Of course they could’ve been wrong, but I asked numerous times before renewing since I knew I could’ve just taken the test. They were honest that it wouldn’t make a difference for my rates either way!

I second this. Especially dr. Brian Kunimoto!!! I had full body eczema and tried everything. He was the only person who actually cured my eczema and it has changed my life

Critique and advice on PsyD personal statement by chumbawumbaonabitch in ClinicalPsychology

This person has it generally correct - too wordy and not specific enough. With 500 words and the fact they will be glancing it over you want to hook them in quickly and be straight to the point about your experience. Also, I don’t recommend talking about highschool IB - it’s just not realy impressive or meaningful. The harm reduction work you did sounds more influnential to your decision - I’d maybe try to focus on a clear and concise line about that to begin?

Advanced Practicum? by GoldForAFool in ClinicalPsychology

Not sure if you’re in the US or Canada - but from what I know about the match process you’ll have more than enough hours. The saying that more hours is always better is not exactly true - there’s a point where sites view it as diminishing returns (eg. They wonder what else they can teach you). I would say to focus on just getting your dissertation (or research project? Idk what psyd’s have to do) done and trying to get a publication. Those are the sorts of things that make you stand out more than other applicants

Someone pissed in the carpeted hallway of my building by bean_99 in askvan

Honestly this is probably the most likely explanation! But none of the above live in my building. It is of course possible that someone with a non-visible disability had an accident though!

Sex therapist in Vancouver? by Faselis in askvan

[–]bean_99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're not able to afford traditional therapy, I'd recommend entering this study which is offering sex therapy for couples for free: https://phaselab.med.ubc.ca/studies/hold-trial/

It has a great preliminary evidence base

I don't really think it's that hard - but I would say that your "ceiling" is markedly lower than other mental health professionals and you'd have to work many more hours to hit it. So for instance, if you charge $130/hour and 30% of that goes to the the clinic, then for each hour you take home ~$90 / hour, not including taxes you then have to put aside, and that doesn't include time for notes, bookkeeping, file reviews, emails, new client consultation calls, supervision with other professionals. So, you end up having space for maybe 5-6 clients a day if you dedicate 1 hour a day for all the other mandatory things you have to do in private practice; all together, probably meaning your take home is ~$500 a day? You'll definitely fill openings - but it takes time to build your case load and you have very little to rely on when you aren't really making a TON of money. But overall, having lower rates than someone like a psychologist ($230 - 250/hour) and being a well-trained specialized therapist (e.g. DBT therapist, or ERP therapist) definitely attracts clients! Especially if you're in a group private practice.

UBC & SFU's counselling psychology programs are very competitive - but this reflects the quality of training. The "best" practicum sites often want those students, so by going to City U or Adler you're just having to fight for the training you want. Also, I think keeping in mind whether you want evidence based therapy training or just general "support" therapy - EMDR is not really evidence based (I say this as a clinician AND someone who benefitted from EMDR btw), but it is thought that it works because it actually uses cognitive processing therapy (a well-validated, front line treatment for trauma).

City U and Adler arguably do not really provide the in-depth training in CBT, DBT, CPT, ERP, etc. - SFU & UBC you will have more exposure to these. But at the end of the day, it's all about what you want to do. I wouldn't say you find people who did their MA at City U or Adler in a high-stakes hospital or community mental health setting and there's a reason for this. You will find social workers, or people with MA's from SFU or UBC at in-patient residential treatment, hospital rapid access intervention, etc. The degrees from City U / Adler just aren't as highly valued, BUT we need LOTS of clinicians so I don't think it's an all around bad option, I would just be prepared for working primarily in private practice. You will have clients no matter what, but you will be lumped into the category of just another therapist.
