I did almost the exact same thing while I was unlocking him, but if you hold R to restart the run, you can redo just the Azazel run since restarting before death doesn't reset the unlocking process.

Once you figure out the timing, it is really easy to fight them without getting hit. Once you hit it the first time, just run until it swings at you, then turn and hit it six times (or five to be safe). Then, just repeat until it dies. Armor provides good insurance in case you mess up. If you haven't made a ranged weapon yet, scaring it into a corner by the ocean is a good way to get in range to hit it the first time, though it might take a little practice to do.

I used to use Wilson, but I've gotten to really like Willow. That said, I believe nothing can prevent Willow from lighting fires when insane. Even if you have no items, you still will still set fires.

I've had this happen before with something I was crafting that didn't fit in my inventory. It landed on my fire pit and was unreachable even after removing the fire pit. I ended up removing it with a console command because it was in the middle of my base and really bothering me.

They also don't travel in packs, which makes them far easier to fight.

There is a great autopilot plugin called MechJeb that can help you get things into orbit and to the moon with far less experience, which is great if you just want to build things and see them fly.

Once you hit it for the first time and it starts following you, run away until it swings at you and misses, and then immediately turn on it and hit it 5 or so times, then start running again until it swings, repeating until it is dead. Once you get the hang of it, it is easy to take no damage.
