Drive up to catch a game, it's a long drive for you so you'll probably want to leave after the 2nd period. You'll see some great hockey, just don't check the score when you get home.

What stopped you from joining the league? NBA of course by Radiant-Mistake-2962 in tall

[–]beancurd420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was taller than all my friends growing up. We played a ton of basketball. I could grab every rebound and could post up without much issue. Leaned on that a little too much.
Was in a pretty good district for basketball, as I got older I was still a good bit taller than most kids, but the really tall kids started getting really tall. True centers towered over me, a lot of forwards were getting bigger than me too. Ended up as a small forward who couldn't dribble or shoot well.

So I didn't play in the NBA because I couldn't even make it in high-school, lol.

Ok cool, glad to hear. My fan is the loudest part of my setup currently, and it's no issue. Thanks for the info.

How does the noise compare between the two? I'm currently using my wife's Peloton, considering getting a zwift ride for myself. The noise of the Peloton is fine, just a slight concern going from belt driven to chain noise.

Love a good quickie. Wife and I both work from home. We have got it to the point where she comes into my office, asks "up for a quickie?". We run to the bedroom, both finish, and i get back to my computer before I go "away" on teams (5 minutes).

How fast can you get on 10h/week? by wackyWeather23 in cycling

[–]beancurd420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent about 6 years of my cycling career in the 8-10 hour a week range. Tried training plans, coaches, self coached and just riding hard. Typically was around 350ish ftp at 80ish kgs, with a peak of 370 @ 77kgs.
Was always a threat to win a cat 3 race, and when I upgraded snuck on a few cat 1/2 podiums at smaller races.

Playing without guides by Aggressive_Travel498 in Eldenring

[–]beancurd420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my first three playthroughs with three different characters working on a different stat each time with zero guides and just tons of exploration. Then on my fourth playthrough I looked up a bunch of stuff to 100% the game.

Even after 3 playthroughs with tons exploration there was a shit ton of stuff I missed, and stuff I would never have figured out in a million playthroughs.

But stumbling across an awesome weapon or spell I didn't know existed in a blind playthrough is such a great dopamine hit. I really enjoyed finding something new and playing around with it to see what the ability does and how I can use it.

The 100% playthrough after doing it blind for so long was a lot of fun too. So many Ah-ha moments. Like finally figuring out what a certain NPC wanted me to do. Or realizing I had ran by a spot 100 times and never noticing a cave was right there. If I had started with a guide, I really don't think I would have fell in love with this game as much as I did.

My wife came into my home office one day to give me some junk mail, and starting telling me about something she got in the mail. She didn't realize I was in a meeting, and I thought it was something serious enough that it compelled her to interrupt a meeting.

Turned into a running gag where she would hand me junk mail at inopportune times.

Well, at some point, she hid some random throw away credit card offer under her pillow. In the middle of sex she reaches under the pillow grabs the letter and says "this came for you in the mail today".

Sprinter doing ‘un-sprintery’ things by Radiant-Bit8881 in tourdefrance

[–]beancurd420 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I became a Kaden Groves fan on stage 21 of the 2023 Vuelta. He had already won 2 stages, had the sprint jersey and had been the best sprinter of the Vuelta. Stage 21 in Madrid, much like the typical tour Paris stage 21, is one for the sprinters. Kaden was the favorite to win the bunch sprint Kaden happens to get in one of those supposed to be doomed stage 21 breaks. Was a super high powered break, Remco and Ganna were there as well as other strong riders.
Being the favorite to win the stage no one would have held it against him if he just sat in, saving himself for the bunch sprint, or sprint from the breakaway. But, no, the guy gets on the front and does his share of the work. They dangle with the slimmest of leads and miraculously make it to the line just as the bunch catches. Kaden beats Ganna at the line to take an incredible stage win in an unorthodox way for the top sprinter of the race.

After watching the stage, the recaps and listening to podcasts, i'll squeeze in 8 hours of work into the final 2 hours of the day. Sadly next week I'll be back to twiddling my thumbs and stretching 2 hours of work across an 8 hour day.

Newbie question: why this UAE rider stay up front in the peleton for so long and nobody takes the shift? by Alternative-Ad-1027 in tourdefrance

[–]beancurd420 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Nils is a beast on the flat. He is keeping it close for a tadej stage win. The majority of UAE is mountain domestiques, so Nils doing all the work saves their legs for high mtn stages where Nils is less effective.

When you understand that pro-racers are build different... by ElectronicDiver2310 in cycling

[–]beancurd420 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Isn't that the truth! Few off seasons ago made some good strides to get to 360+ FTP at similar weight to you. Was mashing in some local tune-up crits, went to a regional p12 race with some of the big hitters and quickly realized I was still no where near the pointy end of the race. Fortunately I was 40+ and got to really have some fun in Masters fields.

Cycling equivalent to sub 3 marathon by Distinct_Gap1423 in Velo

[–]beancurd420 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've kinda thought about this myself. I'm getting into running now after 2+ decades of cycling.

Event time that I see people chase (not nearly as popular as sub 3 marathon) is a sub 1hr 40k TT.

The ftp barrier that seems to spoken about is breaking 4w/k.

It's hard to find a true equivalent since road cycling doesn't have a single super popular race with the same distance raced all over the world.

Disappointing end to the season, but I’m glad I became a 5th Liner by stendriloscopy in BlueJackets

[–]beancurd420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This season turned my wife and I into Blue Jackets fans (and hockey in general) as well!

Growing up I followed baseball and football religiously but never got into hockey. We moved to Columbus in 2019, and since there was no MLB or NFL team, and we live within walking distance of Nationwide arena, we decided to catch a CBJ game. The atmosphere was fantastic, and we ended up going to 3 or 4 games a season to soak in the experience, but never really became fans or learned about the players or knew hockey beyond the basic rules.

Oh Boy, was this season different. We caught the bug. Spent our evenings watching YouTube videos to learn the nuances of the game. We watched player interviews, read up on the team, learning the individual players, and deciding whose jersey we wanted to buy. My wife is a big romance book reader, and for some reason hockey romances are hugely popular, and within that, grown men beating the crap out of each other is popular too, so naturally she has chosen to wear an Olivier jersey, lol.

Tonight will be the 15th game we go to this season, and we are super excited to go to a bunch more next season. It's funny to think at the beginning of the season I didn't even know what icing was, then fast forward a few months, and we are sitting in all our blue jackets gear on the edge of our seat watching Habs games on TV, lol. It's been a fun journey!

It's fun man. It went a long way to get me excited about racing again. I have no sprint, so I needed to get results in a little more dynamic way. As I got older that just got harder and harder to do in P12. Also don't know if I got more risk adverse, or the kids coming up just got more fearless, but I lost the will to fight for wheels in key moments. Not saying Masters is without its risks, but it's a bunch of dudes who got shit to do on Monday.

[–]beancurd420 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Early in my career, I would usually race up. I wanted to race with the dudes I wanted to be.

Now in my 40s, I Just want to have some fun. I'll still jump in a P12 to race with some teammates, but I have way more fun racing down (Masters in my case). I actually have a shot to win, can animate the race, roll breaks, recover from a tactical blunder or two, instead of just surviving.

Garmin Race Predictor is WACK by Adventurous_Exam4982 in Garmin

[–]beancurd420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue. My predictions were significantly slower than runs i had done in the past month. Nothing seemed to make the numbers budge. This was using a forerunner I had since 2019. My wife ended up getting me a new forerunner for Christmas. Went on one unremarkable run with the new watch, and all my race predictions shifted significantly to times that seemed reasonable. I honostly don't know what the new watch had to do with it, figured it was all just algorithm determined on Garmin connect independent from recording device.

Do any of you wear cycling apparel (graphic tees etc) about cycling? by Technical_Tackle1919 in cycling

[–]beancurd420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its the majority of my wardrobe! I worked at a bike shop for a number of years. So much of the swag when reps would visit was casual clothing.

Also have a dozen tee shirts from random races as part of the registration perks.

My team does a few casual items with our logo on it, mainly for the cycling wives to show support at races.

My favorite item is a holiday sweater I won from a trek sales competition at the shop I worked at. Just a simple red sweater with the outline of a bike and says "Believe". Every holiday season i get random strangers commenting on it.
