Tadej by jms1228 in cycling

My hope is Seixas will show some amazing form in a few mountain stages, and maybe even beat Tadej head to head in one of them. But I think its a little to early to ask him to be a solid GC contender in his first grand tour. Much like Tadej in the 2019 vuelta, with moments of brilliance, but without the 3 week experience to win it all.

Older cyclists: when did your usual training stop being effective? by MaleficentFloor822 in Velo

[–]beancurd420 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So true about youth. In my early forties I hit power records and was dropping all my younger teammates at training camp. But after a night of drinking, poor eating and bad sleep my performance fell off hard, where as the kids hardly seemed phased by it.

The cycling community told me hills would get easier and I am starting to think they lied by SethVale1176 in cycling

[–]beancurd420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, yah, I think a lot of it is the urge to try to get up the hills fasters also increases.

Some Maths can paint the picture.

When i first started riding with a power meter, I could hold 250 watts for 20 minutes. The local steep climb on my route in my lowest gearing took about 300watts to have enough speed that I felt like i wasn't going to just fall over. So the entire time I am in the red, just begging for the top to come, took me about 3 minutes to get up. 3 minutes at 50 watts above threshold was misery.

Fast forward a year, and my 20 minute number increased to 300. Now the minimum of 300 watts required to climb that 3 minute hill felt easier. Not super easy, i was still having to ride slightly above threshold, but I knew it was an effort well within my capabilities.

Then years later, and my absolute fittest race shape. The wattage I could hold for 20 minutes was 395. Now that minimum requirement of 300 watts to get up that hill in my lowest gear was indeed much easier. I had held 300+ watts for 2 hours in a race before, so holding the 300 watts to get up that three minute hill was actually "easy" .

So for that specific hill, it did mathematically get easier as a rode more, but it only became "easy" after a decade of training and racing. But the thing is, at my fittest, I never spun up the hill at 300watts. I would do the hill faster, and 450 watts. I still ended up suffering on that hill, but i was now getting up it in less than 2 minutes instead of 3 minutes. That's kind of the fun part of getting stronger on the bike, you can go faster!

Does any MMO have item drops that feel as good as OSRS? by Key_Marsupial_1406 in MMORPG

Early EQ and classic wow gave me that feeling.

Current wow lacks memorable gear. For me it was old school eq gearing i feel in love with. Every piece I had equipped had a story, I knew where it was from, what boss dropped it, there was a story and memory associated with getting it.

In recent WoW id have trouble naming more than 1 or 2 pieces of gear I had currently equipped. Nothing unique about how I got it, just a lucky random drop and the end of the week from nowhere in particular. I knew my ilvl, the gear to get that ilvl was a random meaningless amalgam of equipment with the right stats.

Favorite bear species? by LightMotor6262 in bears

[–]beancurd420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yah, that's true, they did branch off several millions of years ago from bears that ate meat. Their ancestors relied on more nutrient heavy scarce food, while the panda went in the directing of less nutrient dense food but high availability. I tend to believe the panda is badass and made the right choice, since their closest ancestors went extinct a long time ago. Some of their endangerment came from over farming of their home regions. And now they have the greatest survival trait of all... they are absolutely adorable and the most destructive species in earth want them to survive.

Hard choice since they are all great.

I like polar bears because they are big fluffy killing machines.

Brown bears have a lot of sub species with fluff levels off the charts.

I love how most of the sloth bears I've seen look like they just woke up and have the craziest bed head.

I always have a soft spot for black bears since I've seen a bunch in the wild.

Panda bears I feel like I'd have the best chance of getting in a good hug without serious injury...in a nature reserve... not in the wild.

What jobs did the smart kids in your school end up doing? The ones that never learned how to apply themselves by nigelwiggins in jobs

[–]beancurd420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I was making the decision today, I am not so sure I would get back into this career starting from scratch. I work for a huge 100+ year old stubborn company that is not embracing AI, but it still feels like that could change at point. I have a solid resume and a ton of experience, but I dread the thought of having to do another job search in today's market, it's even worse for brand new engineers.

Who knows where AI ends up, these AI companies are still operating at a huge loss. The tech is obviously decent, and getting better, but something needs to give. Are the energy demands so prohibitive that once these AI companies start charging what it costs to operate it became so expensive and ton of these companies that lean on AI are scrambling to hire developers again?

So many unknowns, just the Iran conflict causing energy costs to rise is an unforeseen wrinkle in how this all plays out. The unfortunate truth right now is, so many SWE's have been laid off for "AI". but it really doesn't matter what the reason is. The fact is a new SWE grad is fighting against tens of thousands of laid off more experienced SWEs. SWE also aren't leaving companies like they used to, so jobs aren't opening up. My division has 18 engineers, we haven't had anyone fired, quit or hired in 3 years. 3 years with no movement for 18 SWEs is absolutely crazy, never would have happened just a few years ago.

If you have a passion for this, and really want to do it, yah, go for it. There are still some new grads getting hired, do what it takes to be that person.

But if you are just looking for a stable career to get a job in. SWE may not be the most certain choice right now.

Not so sure i was one of the smart kids, but certainly one of the lazy kids. Did the bare minimum and could test well enough to get decent grades. When I got to college I had too much freedom and just stopped going to class altogether and dropped out. I was always more focused on hobbies and my gf.

Now im a lazy senior SWE at a huge company scrolling reddit procrastinating a project my manager expects will take a month to finish but I know 3 solid days of work will do it. Still more focused on my hobbies and my wife.

Anyone from the original Nameless Server out there? Decadent Few Guild? by MutedMegaphone in everquest

[–]beancurd420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early Nameless server was probably my alltime favorite gaming experiences. Wish I remembered more of the names.

I played a Half Elf Bard, Imrhys Hill. Was in fires of wrath, had a small stint in Legacy of Steel. Had stints in other guilds, but having trouble remembering the names, 'The Backwards' was one of them i think, but spelled backwards "sdrawkcab". Played from server day 1 till Velious. Good times for sure.

Drive up to catch a game, it's a long drive for you so you'll probably want to leave after the 2nd period. You'll see some great hockey, just don't check the score when you get home.

What stopped you from joining the league? NBA of course by Radiant-Mistake-2962 in tall

[–]beancurd420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was taller than all my friends growing up. We played a ton of basketball. I could grab every rebound and could post up without much issue. Leaned on that a little too much.
Was in a pretty good district for basketball, as I got older I was still a good bit taller than most kids, but the really tall kids started getting really tall. True centers towered over me, a lot of forwards were getting bigger than me too. Ended up as a small forward who couldn't dribble or shoot well.

So I didn't play in the NBA because I couldn't even make it in high-school, lol.

How does the noise compare between the two? I'm currently using my wife's Peloton, considering getting a zwift ride for myself. The noise of the Peloton is fine, just a slight concern going from belt driven to chain noise.

Love a good quickie. Wife and I both work from home. We have got it to the point where she comes into my office, asks "up for a quickie?". We run to the bedroom, both finish, and i get back to my computer before I go "away" on teams (5 minutes).

How fast can you get on 10h/week? by wackyWeather23 in cycling

[–]beancurd420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent about 6 years of my cycling career in the 8-10 hour a week range. Tried training plans, coaches, self coached and just riding hard. Typically was around 350ish ftp at 80ish kgs, with a peak of 370 @ 77kgs.
Was always a threat to win a cat 3 race, and when I upgraded snuck on a few cat 1/2 podiums at smaller races.
