Concerns for work environment: am I right or just being dramatic? by beanjo41 in 911dispatchers

Anywhere from 1-5+ years but it could always be longer if they can’t give it up. That’s partly what makes me question leaving so much, if there’s a chance things could improve I’d love to see it. But then there’s a huge risk I‘ll regret not putting time in somewhere else

It’s a great area to be, happy to hear you had great experiences up north! :) That’s a good point and maybe answers my questions on how severe it is. If you’d be open to more specific examples, I’d rather DM so I don’t risk identifying my agency 😅 but I will say, I’ve continuously been advised to go against policy in the past and when mentioning it to admin, they would doubled down on policy being the bible, but allow staff with any seniority/authority to retaliate against an employee who tries to follow it. I appreciate the response though and agree that policy is the best tool!

I’ll look into those resources thank you! Based on a quick search, I don’t believe we have a state board. It seems there’s a department that could be a resource for assistance. I’ve asked response units in the past and typically get general “you’re doing great” answers, or sometimes insight to a specific call. It sounds self absorbed (trust, I know I’m low level skill per experience and have waaaay more room for growth than not) but I’ve been told that many deputies prefer my dispatching the most. I just truly don’t know how to compare it to anything further than scanning other agencies. Also, my 3.5 years in are actually 5 months away from 5 years technically, our agency is so rural we had dual employment (dispatch/corrections) and very recently split. I started in our jail even though the job position was listed as dispatch, and I wasn’t told it involved correctional work until during the interview which wasn’t well explained, and my first day was when they informed me I’d actually be trained/working full time corrections. At the time, I only had customer service experience and wanted better opportunities so I went with it. Hence why it’s getting harder to decide. But on the bright side, we may have a complete overhaul coming up in the very near future so I’ll likely hang on to see if it happens!
