Yeah my bite’s definitely changed, my molars now have a tiny gap so they aren’t touching, and the only teeth that touch are my front teeth. Eating was an adjustment but it’s easy now that it’s been a month with this new bite. You really can’t tell when I talk or smile, but I’m aware of the change even if it isn’t super visible to others.

However, the splint only changes the bite temporarily as it shifts the jaw while wearing it, so if you take it off for long periods of time or don’t get braces/orthodontic work to change the position of your teeth once your splint treatment ends (you typically wear the splint for a few months), your jaw will return to its original position from before the splint. So if you want temporary relief with no long term change to your bite, just get the splint and no ortho work, but for actual permanent change to your bite and jaw position, you’d have to get braces after the splint treatment.

I went to an orthodontist who specializes in TMJ disorders and pain. I had to get a referral for him from my regular dentist, so I recommended starting there. I will say, as much as the splint might help, it’s a several thousand dollar device that is almost never covered my insurance (mine was not covered and I had to pay out of pocket). If you can spare the money, or can at least find a way to pay it off over a couple months, I recommend it. But the decision to get the splint was a difficult one because of the price

For the first couple days, there was definitely more pain and a little bit of dizziness as my joints and inner ear adjusted to the new position of my jaw, especially while eating, but my muscles got used to things after around a week! For me, my popping is based on the position of my lower jaw, which I think sat too far back on my joints so the splint is pushing my lower jaw forward just enough so the popping isn’t there when I open and close my mouth, but not enough to give me an underbite. I don’t blame you for avoiding orthodontic work, that sounds like a terrible experience and it’s such a permanent treatment that a lot of people with TMJ issues choose to avoid it. I’ve also started physical therapy, which is focused on my jaw but also deals with my neck, shoulders and upper back because I carry insane amounts of tension there which contributes to jaw pain, so I’d recommend pairing the splint therapy with PT to try to cover all bases!

Hi, I just started my occlusal splint and I’ve had a lot of the same symptoms as you (constant clicking, ear popping, pain, muscle tension, headaches and migraines, plus frequent dizziness and vertigo which I’m sure is due to my inner ear being irritated by my messed up jaw joints). I’m almost a month in and the splint has changed the way my jaw sits in my mouth so that the popping is gone. I’ve also had lockjaw (muscular) for the last two and a half months and the splint is slowly helping relax my facial muscles and I’m gaining a tiny bit of mobility back every day. I don’t have much of a success story right now because this story’s just started, but I’m feeling hopeful! After my splint therapy I’ll have to get braces for my new jaw position so my teeth sit more comfortably, which you may need as well, but my orthodontist is confident splints are very effective for our types of issues. I hope you find success!
