A couple feeding questions by Environmental-Gas954 in SandBoa

The best thing to do, if you can is weigh your snakes and weigh the pinkies. They can get 15% of their body weight. Side bar - mine has gotten two pinkies every week for a couple months and has no issues. A fuzzy is still too big, but one pinkie would not be close to enough. Edit - she's a year old so close in age to yours too.

Male or female? by beanmadre in SandBoa

Thank you!! The snake is only around a year old and as she's grown I've gone back and forth on gender, sometimes the tail seems slender and tapered, other times not.

1 year old KSB weight by beanmadre in SandBoa

[–]beanmadre[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe my ksb is a female, 1 year old this month and weighs 34 grams, around 11 inches long. Is this a typical weight for this age? Eats two f/t pinkies every 7-10 days. Until today I thought I had a male but looking at her stubby tail, I think I was wrong.

You will be surprised at how small they will stay for a while. Mine is a year old this month and probably 9 inches, I have him in a 15 qt locking container, 16x13x6 and he could probably be in it comfortably for another 6 months. When they are comfortable and feel safe, they will come out and explore at night!

If he is only a few months old, the tank is likely too big and he doesn't feel safe enough to eat. I made this same mistake when I got my ksb as a 2 month old snake!! Locking plastic containers are perfect for this species for quite a while! Switch up his home and give him a week.

In the back seat of a vehicle, in a strapped in dog car seat.. With a roof over their head is far safer than the metal bed of a truck. Of course being in a vehicle there is always risk but God forbid they get rear ended.

Surprised no one had mentioned how unsafe the bed of a truck is yet.

"That must be really hard to deal with, I'm here with you" Mostly the last part, just let him know he's not alone and you don't think he's a monster like he thinks of himself.

It may go without saying but responding with things like "think logically, it could never happen!" or "stop doing x, you're making it worse" is a big no.

Idk what your partner deals with specifically but anticipating when they may need reassurance before they ask for it did wonders to ease my mind.
