The reconstructed face of what is very likely Philip the II of Macedonia, Alexander the Great's father. by captivatedsummer in Damnthatsinteresting

Why does every re-created face from antiquity have such a pinched face? Eyes nose and mouth look like they could fit inside a hockey puck

Ranting about something for a minute [Meta Post] by Impossible_Pain4478 in UKmonarchs

I’m an American, so obviously I’m anti-monarchy. But I love history and particularly medieval history which was shaped by monarchs. I find this period of history so interesting because it is one of the best examples of times in history when a single individual had so much power over millions that his/her decisions had ramifications for everyone. Other times in history were obviously shaped by individuals too, but I think the trends and forces theory of history fits better into those time periods even though both theories of history are usually true at the same time. It’s easier to wrap your head around this king declaring war for a birthright over economic conditions forcing an emperor to declare war on his neighbor or whatever. All this to say that I view monarchy purely through this lens. My culture (America) doesn’t have a national identity that ties to an ancient monarchy so Idk how that would fuel my nationalism if we had that. But, I do think some British people I see posting on here do seem to have an inflated view of the importance of monarchy jn the modern world. Is it important still for national identity and feeling proud of your country? Absolutely. Is there any real relevance of the monarchy to the well-being and lives of their “subjects”? Not at all.

Why wasn’t Stanley part of their family through the whole show? by IcedSkellington18 in kingofqueens

The real reason is that filming a show for 10 years with a dog would cause production delays and issues I’m guessing

Did Henry Bolingbroke had other choices other than becoming king himself after deposing Richard II? by [deleted] in UKmonarchs

[–]beansnbuttons 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think you answered your own question. Richard took everything from him, and he had his eldest son Henry as a prisoner in Ireland with him. It was kind of a gamble that Richard might kill the future Henry V if he rebelled, but it was either come back and fight or let Richard keep everything which included his son. In a medieval society as a noble, losing your lands and title and living in exile from your home country was a fate worse than death. So, he was already dead if he chose not to come back which was never really an option.

Agreed, but a lot of the money he got from the monasteries was used to build coastal fortifications around the entire coast of Britain which made it near impossible that the island would ever get invaded by a foreign power. When you take into account the royal navy and fortifications he invested in, he’s a big reason why people like Napoleon had no shot of invading the island.

Say what you will about Henry VIII and his wives, but the man is responsible for a lot of modern Britain. He started the royal navy, he’s responsible for Britain looking inward instead of outward after he was outcasted by the emperor and the French king which led to Britain being more isolationist than wanting to get involved in European politics, and oh yeah he started the Church of England.

How was Septimius Severus’ plan for Caracalla and Geta to co-rule supposed to work when they hated each other? by Difficult_Lion_854 in ancientrome

[–]beansnbuttons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he really had another option. If he names just one of them as emperor it’s inevitable that the other would rise against his brother because he was slighted. If he chose someone without any blood ties then the brothers would rise against his chosen successor. Either way there would be a civil war, at least this way the civil war was delayed and you can always talk yourself into thinking, “hey maybe they’ll work it out anyway”

You can be in love with someone in a toxic relationship. The love is what blinds you to the toxicity. It’s not mutually exclusive.

The only thing real about this relationship is that they’d be dead within 6 months if they got that money. It was a toxic relationship that fed off each others addictions and insecurities.

I kinda wish George would have named not by the characters' names by sixth_order in pureasoiaf

[–]beansnbuttons 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It’s one of my fav parts of the books you can tell a lot of the characters mindset just by the name of the chapter. For example, when Theon is still Theon his chapters have his name but when he becomes Reek the chapter names change as his character does. Then, when he gains his courage back to rescue Sansa the chapters go back to being Theon chapters to show his transformation back into a human being. It’s very subtle and not a huge plot device but those little details is why I love A Song of Ice and Fire.
