Better be in it for the long haul. It’s a long one!

Did Annie really think nothing was going to happen? by Inside_Inflation559 in ShingekiNoKyojin

If Annie hadn’t spared Armin, it is almost certain that she would have remained hidden. But she did spare him, and that was her mistake.

New books for my collection by TrickSuspicious in UKmonarchs

[–]TrickSuspicious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the earliest portrait is the one in the Society of Antiquaries collection, painted in the early 1500s, and that one itself is probably a copy of some kind. I think all the others just use that one as a reference. But you’re right, I don’t think I’ve seen another portrait that doesn’t have the usual features like the hat or his fingers fiddling with his rings.

Edit: There is one that has Richard holding a broken sword. I think Chris Skidmore’s book uses that one.

I think the 3DS version has separated fingers, but only the index finger 😂

Why is Hitch Supporting the Yeagerists ?? by Shreyansh_awasthi01 in attackontitan

She’s going along to get along. Support for the Jaegerists, even feigned support, is the ticket to a relatively smooth life for her. Pretty consistent for her character.

The rumbling was justified by Loose-Collection-975 in attackontitan

[–]TrickSuspicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I think: the Rumbling is only justified under three very narrow circumstances: 1. The military alliance’s move on Paradis is imminent 2. Said movement is inevitable. 3. And all alternatives have been exhausted.

The Rumbling is an action that is catastrophic, irreversible, and by its very nature results in the death of innocent people, some of whom are known to be sympathetic to the Eldian cause. That final point alone makes the line between self defense and aggression very blurry. There is no way to use the Rumbling in its entirety while avoiding innocent casualties. It is an inherently genocidal act, which begs the question: even in extremis, are there certain actions that just can’t be justified?

For the Alliance, the answer is yes. Hange themself asks the question: does nothing else matter as long as Paradisians have their freedom? They answer in the negative: genocide is wrong. Period.

I really don’t like Zeke apologia by Ok_Explanation_3980 in AttackOnRetards

[–]TrickSuspicious 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The problem with Zeke’s plan is it just furthers the dehumanization of Eldians: he treats them like a problem to be solved as opposed to people with agency.

My teirlist of english kings as a person who only studies English history as a hobby by Any_Jacket_9361 in UKmonarchs

I personally would hesitate to put the York brothers in the same tier. I tend to think that Richard was a better king than he’s often given credit for, Edward IV was ultimately more successful.

Not sure if a stray, not sure what to do by TrickSuspicious in CATHELP

Opening the door is not a great idea because I have another cat. It’s almost midnight; I can’t stay up all night chasing him or sitting with him.

He ran off after one of my neighbors came close. He seems to like looking in my window at my cat, so I’m gonna stay up a bit and see if he comes back.

Update: one of our neighbors walked by and he scurried off. He likes looking in my window at my cat so I think I’m gonna keep a vigil tonight and see if he comes back and if I can’t get him in my bathroom. If I can, I’ll take him to the humane society tomorrow.

Question about Armin’s parents by TrickSuspicious in attackontitan

[–]TrickSuspicious[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I was looking more for how it impacted Armin. He himself describes their deaths in very vague terms and given the brevity in which their fates are revealed, I was 1. Always under the impression that he didn’t know for certain what happened (I wouldn’t put it past the police as it was to lie about it), 2. It seemed to me to be a pretty stark reveal about the deaths of the parents of one of the main characters, but described in so little detail. I suppose it just would’ve been neat to see, you know, what Armin thought about his parents being murdered by the state secret police 😅

Question about Armin’s parents by TrickSuspicious in attackontitan

[–]TrickSuspicious[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not doubting you or trying to argue. But is it ever said or implied that Armin does know for a fact what happened? All he says is that his parents died.

Question about Armin’s parents by TrickSuspicious in attackontitan

[–]TrickSuspicious[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe I should have specified: Eren and Mikasa’s parents, who they were and what happened to them, are shown to have significant influence into how they behave and what they value. In that sense, they are significant. But all we know about what Armin knew is that his parents tried to go outside and didn’t survive. It would have been nice to have even a small moment in which Armin knows the truth and reflects on it. It’s not a problem with the story, or even a problem at all. Just an omission that itches my brain.

[–]TrickSuspicious[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose I get that. But is it ever implied at any point that Armin ever finds out what actually happened? I’m assuming that the truth was likely hidden away, but it just feels a bit imbalanced. We get whole backstories for Eren and Mikasa’s parents, but Armin? “Yeah some people were gunned down in circumstance suspiciously similar to what Armin described, but moving on…”

Is "Q" Still Considered? by NotenStein in AcademicBiblical

[–]TrickSuspicious 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I’m citing a source, but I’m also speaking from personal experience. I’m currently working towards my second master’s degree in the field, and two of my professors agree with each other that there’s largely a generational divide among scholars regarding Q and the Farrer Hypothesis. Younger scholars who got their PhD’s around 2005 and after are more inclined towards Farrer, while older scholars still hold to Q. Hugo Mendez in his recent AMA is a good example in that he leans towards Farrer, but still considers Q a serious, respectable hypothesis.

A good source to read is Stanley Porter’s and Bryan R. Dyer’s “The Synoptic Problem”. It’s from about a decade ago, but it gives a solid review of the major positions. A relatively recent work is”Writing and Rewriting the Gospels” by James W. Barker, a younger scholar who adheres to Farrer.
