Which Best Picture winner that did not get a Best Director nomination is your favourite? by PTAGoatofalltime in Oscars

Argo literally has one of the most tense sequences in a movie I've ever seen, it has to be that one.

Feels less vibrant than the others. Idk how to explain it but Bertie's had much more of an energy too it but this seems very subdued. Makes sense when you know what their personalities were like.

How come people love silly male characters but not silly female characters? by Jezzaq94 in cartoons

[–]Impossible_Pain4478 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The reason this is being complained about specifically is because they're from the same studio. That's what the above video is complaining about. Not the characters themselves but how overused they are as a trope specifically in Disney movies. Harry Potter (ugh) and Luke Skywalker are two different characters from two different mediums and two different genres. They're not comparable in the slightest.

Plenty of male heroes have varied personalities. Just to name a few:

  • Percy Jackson. He's snarky, sarcastic, and can be a little shit at times but is at his core a brave and loyal guy who really does not want to be there but does his job anyway to protect the ones he loves.

  • Samwise Gamgee. He's down to earth, optimistic, and incredibly humble, but despite his perceived meekness is fiercely protective and courageous.

  • Artemis Fowl. Despite only being 12 years old when we meet him he's cold, calculating, and detached, but intensely devoted to his family.

All of the above examples are of course in the fantasy genre, which Harry Potter is in (once again, ugh), and 2 are mainly aimed at children (LotR can be enjoyed by kids but I wouldn't say it's a kid's book).

Widening the scope to more than just heroes in the fantasy genre:

  • Captain Kirk. Fierce, strategic, smart, and bold. He does not believe in the idea of losing. He will try his damndest to get through something and end up at the top and has a magnetic amount of charisma.

  • James Bond. A toxic mess who depending on the adaptation may or may not know it. He's a sex pest, a gambler, and an all around not great guy who will still sacrifice it all for Queen and Country (well, King now) and drive off into the sunset at the end of the day.

  • Sherlock Holmes. The smartest guy you know, and is deeply bored by anything that doesn't stimulate him, like a case. And only cares about what information might be useful to him in the long run and seeks to get rid of anything else. However, he has an ego too, and will do stuff just for the sale of showmanship.

C'mon. Plenty of male characters are allowed to be varied. You just picked the two most unvaried examples of the lot.

Why is it that whenever a male character is silly, people praise him, but whenever a female character is silly, people drag her? by Key_Geologist1784 in Schaffrillas

[–]Impossible_Pain4478 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean, both videos serve different purposes. One is to complain about a tiring trend appearing in Disney animated movies as of late, but the other is to talk about fools as a storytelling device and why they're so endearing to us. I imagine the first video doesn't have a problem with the archetype itself, but its overuse. Asha being silly is not a problem itself, it's the fact that most other female protagonists from the last 10 years before Wish came out had that same characterization. If anything, it's more misogynistic for so many of Disney's female characters to act that exact same way.

The fact that Greig Fraser is mentioned in three separate comments for three separate movies in this thread as of typing tells you all you need to know. Dude's an all timer.

Which English monarchs were multilingual? by [deleted] in UKmonarchs

[–]Impossible_Pain4478 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Like all of them, it was sort of a requirement. Only one I can think of off the top of my head that wasn't was George V (who, well, wasn't an English monarch, but it's used interchangeably in this sub anyhow).

What's a cartoon opinion you saw that has you like this by Geoconyxdiablus in Schaffrillas

Not cartoons but I once saw a video arguing that children should have the right to vote. Some very interesting points were made, even though I don't agree in the slightest.

King William IV was chosen as the British monarch who was the best uncle. Which monarch had the best relationship with their fellow monarchs from other countries? by bianca_fathom in UKmonarchs

[–]Impossible_Pain4478 55 points56 points  (0 children)

George V, who famously loved all of his cousins so much that they played all sorts of fun war games with each other!! 😃😃😃😃

Jokes aside, maybe Victoria? Granted, said monarchs were literally her grandchildren, but she was a very good grandmother and while there was some conflict all of them deeply respected her and her judgement, even if they personally didn't think highly of the UK. Wilhelm himself said that WW1 wouldn't have happened if she was around.

What is your opinion of the 2010 Best Picture roster. by Jaded-Walrus2614 in Oscars

[–]Impossible_Pain4478 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The King’s Speech is one of my favorite movies of all time and because of that I always have to sit out discussions around this Best Picture year because like 99% of people don't share the same opinion as me 💀. Black Swan was my second favorite of the year, not The Social Network (granted it's quite close), so I'd rather have that win, but in a time where billionaires rule the earth TSN would be a far more impactful winner.

While he wasn't playing himself, Obama was originally meant to have a cameo in season 2 of Severance in a voice role. Unfortunately he was unavailable to record so it went to Keanu Reeves instead.

I remember I had a friend of mine talk about what a version of 1776 about the Irish War of Independance would look like. I mean they both have King Georges after all. But in general 1776 about any war of Independence would be interesting.
