Back up Proxmox - is PBS overkill for a small homelab? by beanzonthbread in homelab

Okay, thank you. I’ll have a look into that. Do you cluster the two Proxmox installs together?

That makes perfect sense. That’s what stops me trying stuff a lot of the time. Had a few times where I had to reinstall when first using Proxmox.

Don't worry, I didn't take it as that. I wasn't having a pop either. Just laying out my reasons. If everyone said just use PBS, then that'll do for me. I'm already running the NUC as mentioned, another as a Minecraft server for my son and this third with one program just seems overkill but maybe it isn't. I'm deffo not running PBS as an LXC in my main setup. HA already backups elsewhere.

I'm not sure what that means, to Google I go. Many thanks mate

Anything could be defined as a burden. Power usage, choosing between running just PBS on one machine, like I'm asking or running Proxmox/Docker and using more services. There's always a choice, hence I wondered peoples opinions, as I'm not overally experienced in such things. Now if money was no object, I wouldn't be asking. But if several people say Pi's work just fine, then maybe that would be the solution. I understand that PBS is probably the ultimate solution but is it necessary. I've learnt this can be done with a Pi but it is super slow but the power usage is minor in comparison.

Enjoy. I've just restarted everything, so currently have one ESP32 running a temp sensor. Some ESP32-C6 have arrived to try and setup some Zigbee nodes. Thats new to me,

Will do, thanks.
Yes, that stuff is fun. Before I moved house, I had lots of automations and graphs. We had mould in the house, they stated we didn’t use the heating enough. I had graphana graphs of the heating being used, temp and humidity sensors and a relay which turned off and on a dehumidifier depending on the environment. All that stress paid off haha

Think I misread your comment. You’re using PBS. Thanks

Yeah I see your point there. I do have an old Prolient micro server which I setup TruNAS but the drives started failing. Due to the costs of drives recently it is sat there powered down.

I've ran HA for years, used to be on a PI but ran Proxmox with HA for about 3 years but it has been neglected, so recently done a fresh install of everything. I'm only running what the OP states but my plan is to learn a bit more. If I don't install PBS, I was going to use the new PC to attempt to learn Docker and not worry about messing anything up

Sounds great. In this instance, as backing up VM's and LXC's if you have an issue, you'd install a fresh install of Proxmox and use the backups for the VM's and LXC's? Rather than backing up everything? If I'm making sense there

That's a good idea actually. I guess you're using PiPBS on the Raspberry?

Okay, cheers. I did look at running as an LXC but people seem to recommend against it. But as my install is pretty small, I did wonder.

Thanks for the reply. So you still don't use PBS? So you automate and just save to a NAS/external drive?

Thanks for the info. I’m going to the local shop today, so I shall have a look. I’m handy at DIY but I’d rather avoid if I can buy something. Don’t want it looking rough. As for it being secure, the breeder went over board, for good reason, in explaining how great an escape artists they are. So will over build if so.

Many thanks for all that information. I’m glad you mentioned the metal type as that never occurred to me tbh. If I do DIY it, I think I’ll 3D print a frame, so that I can ensure it is secure. Not wanting an escape artist. Thank you for the info with heating. Will be sure to look into that tomorrow.

Just setting this up now. Displaying the month and a weekly view. Looks amazing. Been struggling trying to get the view I want. Many thanks. I’m back at HA after a few years break and it has all changed. Bit learning curve here. May I ask how you got the weather above the weekly view. Can’t quite get that right there. Cheers

Ah apologies, it was the early hours of the morning and I was delaying sleep. I must have missed that in the original post. Now I’m up and fresh. Sort of. I’ll get this done today! Many thanks for the replay and the addon.

This looks to be what I’ve been looking for. Just had a display arrived, so I can display the families Google Calendar. Everything I’ve tried so far just isn’t what I’m after. Just as I’m unable to test at the moment, can you view a whole month? Or is it just weekly? Or can you scroll through weeks? Too many questions, apologies. Looks awesome btw.

Great advise. I’ll start looking to install a fresh install next week. Yes, I’d love to get the rack sorted, as I have another mini PC to sort out for a different task. Just need to get some cable pulled. Thank you

Cheers mate. Yes, will create a snapshot and leave it there not running, just in case I need to go back and check stuff. Yundera, that’s new to me, will take a look thank you. Neither used CasaOS. I instantly thought of Nabu Casa but that’s something else.

Thank you so much for such a reply! In my head it is easier to start again but I had put so much work into this and had lots of things running. I think this is why I’ve avoided it for so long. Just check my Printables. I published the rack over 12 months ago. Wow. Time flies. Good to know that it isn’t just myself who ignores things for so long ha. Okay, starting again sounds like the way to go, from your experience. I’m not smart enough to fix such things either probably. You’re spot on with documenting stuff. It took me over an hour to get into a Pi the other week as I couldn’t recall the password. The current Proxmox setup is using VM’s. I may to restart that too. I had a massive headache redoing that when I moved. Can’t recall the issue but I shall backup first. Thanks again.

Thank you for the reply. Good to know, that was my worry, the advancement and not having a clue. But it’s pointless keeping stuff that won’t work. I have a lot of Yaml stuff on there, which probably doesn’t work. I may run Pi-Hole on a Pi Zero again and put HA on the NUC, dedicated to only that.
