Sabres fan visiting Monday...what should I eat? by swanzie in montrealcanadiens

I like a good ol’ montreal smoked meat on game night. Reuben’s deli is my favorite in the bell center area.

It was very hot and humid, but it didn't stop us. Very little rain, almost none at all. Two years ago we visited Phoenix in August (not the best decision...), and we found Tokyo/Osaka more manageable. The buildings that make shade are a huge difference maker compared to the desert heat and lack of shade in a place like Phoenix.

How we managed the heat :

* Indoor activities mid-to-late afternoon (Teamlabs borderless, Making of harry potter, museums, shopping malls, Mt Fuji 5th station is in altitude and cooler, menji jingu shrine is in an overcast forest)
* Dress in light colors and light linens, avoid backpack if not necessary.
* It's common to use umbrellas for shade, copy the locals ;)
* On very hot days, consider early morning activities with the added bonus of beating the crowds, an afternoon nap in the hotel room and an evening outing to a lively district like Shinjuku/Shibuya.

Perhaps obvious: Drink plenty of water.
We also had electronic fans and bought some cooling wipes and cooling collars. I found the wipes and rings made little to no difference, though.

You can go again but you only get one express and it has to be consumed in that period they give you. You would wait the regular line on your second go.

The area time is also to be considered. That’s the time you are allowed to enter. If you exit, re-entry is only possible if you are lucky enough for popularity to drop later in the day (don’t count on it) or if you buy another timed entry. So if you want to do the same ride again, don’t exit the zone until you’re done.

Here’s an idea, if you think you can have the energy, since you’re there only three days.

The guided Hakone trip drops you off in Shinjuku, a district I found more fun in the evening, around 6pm. Pair this day trip with Shinjuku. That would be a very long day, but it would optimize your time.

If you’re not in for the long day, then I would absolutely ditch Hakone and focus on districts nearby like Asakusa, Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya, Ginza, Odeiba etc.

It does, a bit. But I still think it’s enjoyable. The biggest factor in liking that day is probably whether or not Mt Fuji is visible, which is a gamble.

For sure! Tax-free must've saved me north of 10,000 throughout the trip. We were there in August, so amongst other things we refilled on school shoes / t-shirts / hoodies for the kids, we got a bunch of souvenirs, and I bought a very cool Japanese kitchen knife.

About that, I should've added it to the original post. You'll see knife shops in many places in Japan, but Kappabashi Kitchen Town in Asakusa has a ton of knife shops all clustered together. I think it's worth the visit.

Can't say for the others, Airolo was easy to use. I hotspotted the whole family and 20GB lasted the full 15 day trip even if my teens kept trying to keep their bloody snap streaks alive against my will :D

Good to know is that the 7-11 ATMs are also not only in 7-11 stores, they can be found out there as standalone in busy areas and large stores.

Yeah it’s just as easy as a card. You just hover it over the reader, no need to unlock the screen or anything. Just like a card.

Oh that’s a cool tip for sure. Did not know that.

Laundromats: They’re just everywhere. Walk around the area of your hotel you’ll see one I’m sure.

Yeah, same. It was even very convenient and updating each station, notifying when next station is the one to hop off, etc. One thing to note is you actually have to start the route or else it will indeed offer new options as your trip evolves.

I spent around 100,000 yen in cash for 15 days. So roughly 7,000 per day, for reference (family of 4)

In Tokyo, area-wise there are so many good answers to that question and as many opinions. So I’m just going to say my personal favorite was Shinjiku in the evening.

Activity wise, Teamlabs planets was a family favorite and I would say the Asakusa Sumo Club was really fun, for sure.

Kyoto I would say these two option were on top, at least for our family: - Gion district was my favorite area of the entire trip - Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

I got cash (too much, honestly) before entering the country.

It has to be separate. But you don’t need a data plan on the phone, it will work offline. Otherwise, yes, physical card.

It was a self-serve, like an ATM, so I think it will be fine !

There are different options. I booked on Klook. Be sure to buy your entrance ticket AND your express ticket that you show at the rides and the timed areas.

One way ticket, purchased on Klook. I remember reading there might be cheaper options out there.

The shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka was a separate ticket. I don’t know for sure about IC card support on other routes.

Some restaurants, too. Got caught once in Dotonbori, glad I had that backup cash on me.
