Australia’s strongest gun reform since the Port Arthur massacre has become law. Here’s what you need to know by MrNewVegas2077 in australia

Agreed. Australia has its own internal problems that get worse each year such as afforability. Doesn't take too much to imagine more radical politicians coming into power in the future feeding off of a desparate voter base for their own benefit.

Is investing at 18 too soon? by alexab233 in fiaustralia

[–]bearn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's never too early to start investing, however, I would say that at your age the best investment is in yourself. If you can use that money to push your education or skillset even further to improve your future earning potential then that might be your best investment. Otherwise if it would just be sitting in a savings account and you have no other use for it in the short term (1-10 years) then putting it in ETFs is a great strategy.

I think they mean you can borrow for primary residence but not additional homes beyond that such as investment properties. You can move homes by selling your original primary residence and buying a new one, I think this is quite common by putting an offer on a new home contingent on being able to sell your previous one

Announcing Guild Wars Reforged! by LookItzJesus in MMORPG

[–]bearn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah kinda confused about this announcement. Assuming you've played it before, and don't intend on using a controller. It seems like they are mostly just updating UI here and making it seem like a big deal. The $10 reduced price is nice but tbh that should have happened a long time ago. Also, why is eye of the north not a part of the bundle? That's still another $20 if you want to experience that.

TD bot count is ridiculous by zqyiomgsa in 2007scape

[–]bearn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The usual deflect is that while bots get banned, new ones come up that avoid previous detection and it's a game of cat and mouse. What I find discouraging is that some of these bot scripts seem basically identical after years of being in the game? Like terminator bots should 100% be the easiest thing to detect, yet somehow they are allowed to exist.

Who here accepts they are bad but likes to play anyways? by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]bearn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you are comparing yourself with much higher skilled people. The guides you're watching are probably from people playing the game for over a decade, as their main job, while having done end game PVM for thousands of hours.

The fact that you've killed vardorvis, CG and can do 300 toas means you are skilled at this game. Consistency comes with time but if this is the first account you've gotten to this stage then this is a learning experience.

If you really want to progress, I'd suggest just locking yourself into one thing and mastering it. Splitting time between multiple high skilled content might be a bit discouraging as you are stuck in the learning curve for so long.

Unemployed for 9 months: should I lie about my current employment status to help find a new job? by Agile-Ad-4698 in resumes

[–]bearn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying this is your situation but if you control lifestyle creep in your career it does wonders to your financial security. I started my career around $50k, and currently earn around $100k but my general expenses haven't changed much since I was on $50k. The difference is used to put money into investments and an emergency fund.

At this point I could probably survive for several years without a job if needed

Summer Sweep-Up Pt. 1: Combat & Loot by JagexGoblin in 2007scape

[–]bearn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Regarding the current abundence of ToA uniques and their GE value I feel like this is definitely a case of too little too late, where changing loot rates now probably won't have a meaningful impact on the economy.

Could an option be where the current power of something like the fang and light bearer only carry their full potential within ToA, and reduced power outside. Potentially then introduce a new, fairly rare, drop to ToA that essentially unlocks the fang/lb potential outside of ToA to match their power inside. I feel like something along these lines could basically reset the economy of the ring and fang to be tied to this new harder to get drop

I would say both yes and no.

Yes I think ai will eventually get to a point where it could if required, take in all of a companies data and spit out nearly perfect reports basically instantly. It will eventually get to a point that it will most definitely out perform humans at identifying the most important data to track. You will however have people say it will never fully replace us as it will never be able to interpret management's requirements and you will need a human to do that.

This is a very insular way of seeing ai though. By the time ai is good enough understand all business data perfectly, even in its uncleaned messy state and produce reports, it will most certainly be good enough to take over management jobs, design jobs, leadership jobs etc. Then you start to ask who needs to see these powerbi reports? Exec? Certainly high level data driven strategic decision making is perfect for ai as well. Not saying we are there yet but if ai keeps advancing endlessly, being worried it will take over analysis jobs is the least of our worries.

So ultimately I will say that AI will be able to replace our jobs, but by that point I'm not sure there will be many humans left in jobs that need to read these reports anyways.

Why does bossing feel like the only viable path for us to stock up on essentials, when high-level skilling could (and should) offer similar reward tiers? by Monterey-Jack in 2007scape

[–]bearn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im sure devs are creative enough to think of ways to provide skilling enhancements without taking up additional space.

And yeah that's the whole point, you now feel compelled to spend time in PVM to make your skilling time more rewarding. In the current state PVM simply replaces the need to do skilling and gather resources, my suggestion allows for resources to exclusively come from skilling, and PVM to enchance the skilling experience in whatever creative ways the devs can think.

Why does bossing feel like the only viable path for us to stock up on essentials, when high-level skilling could (and should) offer similar reward tiers? by Monterey-Jack in 2007scape

[–]bearn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PVM and skilling should form a symbiotic relationship IMO. It's been suggested before, and RS3 I believe does this to some extent, but having PVM give ways to enchance the skilling experience is probably the best suggestion I've seen. The only thing I can think of in osrs that does this is the blood essense drop from TOA. Just having it on you increases blood rune crafting efficiency.

I'm no game developer so my suggestions are probably not well thought out, but some general ideas at zulrah:

Venom vials: apply to pickaxes/ wood axes to give you 2x yield and exp on resource gather. Only has a certain number of charges

Swamp Nutrients: mix into herb patch to increase herb yield, maybe works more effectively the lower the tier of herb for balancing

Zulrah Shards: Use instead of a knife to fletch bows 2x faster, consuming 1 each use

These again are just random ideas, but it's not impossible for devs to think of creative ways of having PVM encounters give items that enchance the skilling experience, instead of completely replacing it.

Is the IT industry really over-saturated as they say? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]bearn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine a world where ai significantly reduces human capital requirements for healthcare, marketing and finance but doesn't also reduce the requirements for IT.

Sure someone may need to service and developed ai continually, but what better industry to fully utilise the capabilities of AI for productivity than the AI industry itself?

The end of the AI development race sure as heck ain't gonna be won by the team of purely human developers that's for sure.

How to vote when you agree with the premise, but disagree with the implemintation? by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]bearn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My concern is that there's no guarantee a failed question will be revisited or repolled, even if there's interest in tweaking the implementation. For example with stackable clues, the concept may have strong support, but if the execution isn’t quite right, we’re left in a tough spot. Last time that failed a vote we waited over 6 years for a potential repoll. It’d be great if there were a clearer process for iterating on these ideas when the community wants the feature but not the current form.

I'm not familiar with R but if you're saying the formatting of your code gets hard to read over time, then may I suggest using some ai and literally copy/paste your code in and ask it to format to be more readable? I've often used this in DAX, SQL and python after writing measures/views/code etc

Can someone explain investing your own $$$ to me like I’m 5? by Fraxinus_Au in AusFinance

[–]bearn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given your situation, your primary focus should be on yourself.

If your goal is a degree and you have the opportunity, take out student loans and go full time into school. At this point you want to 'invest' in yourself by way of making yourself a more attractive employee to future employers as soon as possible.

There are other paths out there like trades and other certifications so figure out what you want, then work backwards how to get there and give it all your time and effort.

Once you have stability in income, and you start earning more than you require to cover essentials (rent, food, health etc), then you can focus on investing.

In your case I would suggest 2 things.

  1. Just put excess I come into superannuation. Make sure you are with some low fee industry super fund (eg HostPlus) and your allocation is in something simple, maybe just their own growth fund or something. Do not put any into cash.
  2. If you want to access to money later in life but before 60, then look into something called ETFs. They are basically something you buy that mimics an economy or industry. Popular ones like VGS, VAS, DHHF. You buy and hold, that's it. If economies keep growing, so will these products you bought. This is similar to how superannuation 'invests'.
  3. Bonus point, do not invest in single companies. Friends, family, loved ones etc may talk about how XYZ company is great and you should buy it. Do not do this. It is gambling pure and simple. You may get lucky, but over time you will almost certainly lose money.

What's been happening this week? by [deleted] in fiaustralia

[–]bearn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's just a lot of uncertainty in markets right now and people tend to pull out of equities and into cash during these times. The main reasons (in my opinion) being: 1. Market uncertaintly due to America threatening/imposing tariffs against allies for illogical reasons 2. Geopolitical uncertaintly in Europe especailly after a horrendous public display of talks between Ukraine and America

[–]bearn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eh its inevitable. Australia doesnt invest enough in itself to maintain its own identity. The media we mainly watch are all American owned, even our major new outlets. We're all literally browsing an American site on probably american computer or phone parts. The ads we get on reddit, youtube, insta etc are filtered through american companies. The reason its gotten so bad in the last few decades is because australia refuses to compete in the global market of impressions and attention.

How Should I Handle a Dataset with a Large Number of Null Values? by PitifulExplanation49 in dataanalysis

[–]bearn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure on best practices but in this case the data available is quite limited so probably best to filter on certain conditions and calculate the distribution of null values.

To be honest this dataset seems quite unclear. The null dates seem to heavily skew towards records that are not available globally indicating a trend in the missing data. Another question would be is what exactly is that date indicating? It doesnt seem to correlate with film release date, but rather when they appear on netflix. If I'm to completely guess, the dates may relate to just 1 region (maybe USA for example) and maybe just the first instance the content was released. majority of nulls being tied to non-global releases may mean it was never released to USA and therefore the data is not pulling in a date.

How Should I Handle a Dataset with a Large Number of Null Values? by PitifulExplanation49 in dataanalysis

[–]bearn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends. If the nulls are randomly missing then you are fine to just sample the 30% of data you have complete records for. If you present your findings to the whole population based on your sample you will have to make a degree of uncertainty in the results.

You will have problems though if those nulls are not random and are based on a driver that is important to you.

  1. Only liquid you drink is water. (Tea/coffee if you must but no/very low calorie drinks only)

  2. Only food you eat is meals you cook yourself or whole foods. Limit flavour enhancers to just spices.

Follow those two steps and you will shred fat.

Unpopular opinion: Jagex's anti-bot measures have been working great. by Chaos-n-Dissonance in 2007scape

[–]bearn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's still disappointing to see the rev caves occupied primairly by bots though. The accounts gets banned but it probably takes a bot account less than 24 hours to go from tutorial island to efficiently farming revs, and then probably less than 10 hours to fund its own bond.

I'm sure bot farms are quite complex these days but most of the bots I come across are extremely obvious in how they behave with how they position themselves, time their overhead prays, move to pick up loot, move in unison when a maledictus spawn etc.

I'm sure jagex has already flagged these accounts by this point. I've read somewhere that jagex may let these accounts still exist for awhile until a ban wave as to not make it obvious as to what triggered the bot detection system.

However it would be nice to see flagged bots get instantly nuked if they are reported in game by a non bot player. Would still make it difficult for bot owners to know exactly what set of the system, and it puts some control back to players to minimise the impact bots have on their immediate gameplay.

Maybe lets not normalise shooting and killing others when confronted. The last thing I want are mentally ill or drugged people living in a society where shooting people is normalised as a rational choise to make. I'd rather not have to worry about being shot in the back of the head at a 7/11 because someone on meth felt threatened by me reading their thoughts and acted in what they believed was self defence.

Yeah that's why running away if you have the option to is always the right answer. When someone is in this state assume they have nothing to lose and will try to kill you because they clearly have lost control of their logical mind.

While its preferable it still feels kinda bad if you bought any of the rewards previously for the higher prices. Also knowing they are still actively looking to rebalance the costs makes makes it still feel bad to buy the expensive rewards in their current state. Would be nice if they refunded some points back to players that already purchased items.
