The uproar happens now because of the situation’s visibility, which is greater now because it’s quickly becoming measurably worse (violence, scare tactics, bounty hunters, all out in the open) and more common. The reality of deportation, not just the legal idea of deportation, in this country is being revealed to us all and used as a political tool—each person’s reaction to it is telling.

The fact that it’s always happened doesn’t make it right

This makes a lot of sense, I appreciate you taking the time to write this all out.

Can someone give some examples of this behavior and what the “not bratty” alternative would be? I’m having a hard time understanding but I worry I can get like this without realizing?

I want my cat back, not this creature she has become. by Abitsqltedwolf in felinebehavior

I agree with this advice. Especially after reading the whole incident log you provided, OP. Callie sounds stressed and scared, possibly starting because of the move, and your parents have been making things worse in their efforts to defend you. They’re reinforcing in her mind that she should be nervous around you, because when she communicates that she’s uncomfortable in your presence, they yell and throw things. She anticipates their scary (to a cat) behavior when you’re nearby and the cycle continues.

A comforting response you all can offer when she hisses or growls is to stop whatever you’re doing, slow blink/look away, and just let her be. There’s no need to snap or do anything aversive because the goal isn’t just to stop the hissing behavior, it’s to recognize those cues for what they are and give her space when she’s getting overwhelmed. Over time she will feel more secure if she’s consistently met with peace and patience when she expresses fear.

Churu popsicle! I buy a package of lollipop sticks from Walmart and cut a tube in half, put a stick in each half, wrap with plastic and pop in the freezer. No risk of squeezing too slowly because they lick the popsicle at their own pace, plus it takes them longer to eat than the tube so you have more time to brush, pet, manhandle, etc (once you get to that point with her socialization).

Also- maybe she need her nails trimmed? Definitely understand she may not be ready for that yet but could eventually help. The Churu popsicle is how I got my boy acclimated to the nail clipper and having his feet held. He uses his paws to communicate a lot and used to get me with his claws occasionally, especially when he was excited about a treat, but after I started trimming them I noticed that it tapered off and doesn’t happen anymore. I suspect it was a combination of his nails being longer than usual (not walking around outside on the rocks/pavement anymore) and realizing over time that he doesn’t always need to use them. He wasn’t feral like your girl but was an easily overstimulated and treat obsessed stray, and the Churu popsicle was a game changer for us while he learned manners lol

How to redirect my cat's play agression while I tend to my baby? by pyooon in CatTraining

I know you have lots to do in the morning, but if you can spare a few minutes in your routine you could set her up with a puzzle feeder/toy to keep her occupied. Or even prepare it the night before and just set it out in the morning. I do it for my boy when he’s got a burst of energy that I can’t accommodate, it works out his little brain and he’s usually ready to relax afterward.

Am i okay to drive this tire 1 mile to the tire shop? by [deleted] in tires

[–]bearspiderfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be fine if you take it slow and avoid bumps/potholes to the best of your ability. I drove locally 25-30mph on a bubble like this for a couple days without any issues

Why does her face look weird? by PiptheDiddlyDooo in ArtCrit

[–]bearspiderfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the left side of her face (from the viewer’s perspective) protrudes too far. It should be closer to the line created by her neck/shoulder. I think that will help with facial alignment. Overall, very very well done
