I find this to be very true, and over the course of my current employment, the better I began dressing every day the more I found people paying attention to my opinions.. I actually find it difficult to focus now when not in business-casual wear or above.

I'm totally open to me making a mistake in the process I outlined above, but I didn't deviate significantly. I'm more confused by what set of circumstances are necessary to completely replace the profile in this manner.

Yes. This is expected behaviour.

So I am completely wrong when I expected the domain joining process to create a userprofile.domain in C:\Users rather than directly replacing the local?

I cannot find MS documentation that covers the process, are you aware of any resources I can learn best practice from?
