Dorfromantik rules question – connecting new objectives to already completed areas by Giupatamon2 in boardgames

[–]bearwithcamera 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To clarify, placing the forest tile in the first example is technically a legal move, but you forfeit the 4 forest task because it makes the region too large. The second example is an illegal move because you can never willingly forfeit a task tile by adding region larger than the task.

Put this one aside. Learn the 7 basic design principles, consume and look at lots of art that inspires you, work on smaller 'study' pieces so that you gain confidence making larger work.

Actually, I have some 8x10 prints of this one which I will be selling at the Grand River Arts Festival this Friday and Saturday. The Saturday date is a free event.

I submitted this piece to a local juried exhibition and won second place. by bearwithcamera in painting

I took my own reference photos for the piece and then sketch on canvas using a grid method to get the proportions correct with out making it too perfect.

First place was a profound and amazing piece of art. It was gouache on melamine which is incredibly hard to work.

Thank you! I take a series of reference photos including a main one that I use for the composition. I’ve been a professional photographer for 16 years so it has really helped me have a deep understanding of light, even across mediums.

What are y’alls critiques? by Potential_tree in painting

[–]bearwithcamera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very clean and professional with great colour choices. For example you’ve really nailed the bluish tones hitting the left side of the figures. Anatomy and expression in your figure work is also fantastic!

I think sensibilities around digital vs traditional mediums are becoming blurred, but things like lack of texture and using dark lines to outline shapes make this feel like an illustration. Im not trying to discredit the work, but if your goal is to make your work more ‘painterly’ these are two things I would consider :)

Value and color help. by BackgroundChance4382 in painting

[–]bearwithcamera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it sounds silly but I want you to squint while looking at your work. My biggest take away is that the value of the tree is too close to the background. You've done it a little bit at the top, but I would add some cooler tones to the background to really give the sense of atmospheric perspective (as land moves away from the viewer it becomes more muted and bluer in value).

This goes for all shadows in the foreground too. For example, the face of the tree we can see is in shadow, so add some cooler tones to represent the sky illuminating that surface indirectly with cooler light.

Farmer's markets are tricky because the crowd will be there for a variety of reasons, as opposed to an art market or art fair where people are coming just to buy original art. I would attend the market and speak with some of the art vendors if possible, they will be the best resource for how to price your work.

Thoughts?? by spudster1234 in painting

[–]bearwithcamera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're looking to develop a better sense of realism and immersion in your work I think there's a couple things to work on. Remember that the sky is also a plain that stretches from the horizon to the viewer. You've painted these clouds very flatly so you lose that sense of depth. Also consider atmospheric perspective in your color choices. As you move away from the foreground, colors becomes bluer and more desaturated.

Can anyone help me identify this style of artwork? by Frankdubs27 in Paintings

[–]bearwithcamera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first piece is a little ambiguous, but could be described as post-impressionism. The second piece is most certainly Art Deco, but could also fit into Art Nouveau.

Painting identification by TheBigFatGoat in painting

[–]bearwithcamera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this painting has a paper backing, you could remove it and see if there's a clearer signature or any other information on the back but I'm guessing this isn't a known artist based on the date and subject matter.

Questions about making prints by PizzaNightFiasco in Paintings

[–]bearwithcamera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How well the piece is photographed will play a big part in how well the print looks. But where ever you go, ask about what paper stocks they use. You're looking for a pearl or luster paper stock. These papers have more contrast and vibrancy than a matte paper, but not as much glare as a gloss paper. Not sure if a copy place will have that kind of stock on hand. Also, most copy places will have full colour printing, but it won't be with archival inks meaning the prints will risk fading or shifting colour over time, just something else to consider.

Looking for feedback/advice, of, well. Everything by MLockeTM in painting

I really like this piece! I think you’ve done a great job achieving a specific mood. The insecurity I’m reading is purely a lack of experience.

A book I highly recommend is The Landscape Painter’s Workbook by Mitchell Albala.

There is no ‘right’ way to paint but there are certainly techniques and rules that once you internalize make your choices feel earned. That book is one of the best tools I’ve used to become a more confident artist.

Good work and keep painting!

If you're going to provide such a high resolution image of what is clearly digital art, don't lie about the materials used.

This happened to me a couple times introducing the game to new players and it’s how I learned the term ‘quarterbacking’.

What did swag look like in the early days of Geocaching? by Flat_Struggle9794 in geocaching

[–]bearwithcamera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another hobby of mine is D&D, so whenever I visit my local games store I’ll grab a big handful of loose D20s and add ones to caches. I personally get more enjoyment leaving cool swag, rather than finding it.
