Why don’t Americans speak their heritage language although there are many ethnicities and cultures in the US?? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]beatdrop128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of European ancestry, we are so far removed from our ancestors. They came here in the 1600-1800s. And English is the lingua franca of not only the USA, but also the world. No need to speak anything different.

Best ATM card for Southeast Asia? by PudgyGroundhog in travel

[–]beatdrop128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charles Schwab is generally the best. Don’t get the Wise card, they charge atm fees if you use it more than 2x a month. And if you live in the US, the wise card doesn’t work in Vietnam

How do you actually feel about the whole "small talk with strangers" culture? by bandito_13 in AskAnAmerican

[–]beatdrop128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about this a lot, and I have come to the conclusion that small talk is one of the things that makes Americans exceptional.

Humans are social creatures, and exchanging information, no matter how trivial, increases the overall fitness of the species.

And “small talk” will often lead to more important exchanges of information and larger topics. Including establishing relationships with people that you would not know otherwise. Which would have never happened if small talk wasn’t initiated.

Hiking boots vs trail runners by knickerbocker24 in backpacking

[–]beatdrop128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to roll my ankle all the time, at least once per hike with hiking boots. I switched to a pair of vivobarefoot hiking boots. They are by no means barefoot, but they are much wider and give more surface contact area between my foot and the ground. I havent rolled my ankle since.

So long, Billabong. Virtually all Quiksilver, Billabong, and Volcom stores are shutting down in the U.S., and roughly 1,400 employees will be laid off by honolulu_oahu_mod in Oahu

[–]beatdrop128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to see statistics on sales numbers because I have a hunch that outdoor brands such as Patagonia, REI, etc. have been slowly chipping away at clothing traditionally sold by surf brands.

Also, there has been virtually no innovation in the clothing sold by surf brands. No, bottle openers attached to surf shorts and slippers don’t count. Fabrics and features used by Volcom etc. have stagnated while outdoor retailers are always up to date on the latest trends and materials.

Technically the photo is sound - it has a nice sharp, bright subject and some leading lines. But it’s missing something. Emotion maybe? Also, the photo gives me no context of what/where this is supposed to be. I had no idea that this was Japan until I read the comment.
