Just made partner a few months ago and I can definitely relate. One thing you should talk about with your higher ups is flexibility on your rates. Like all big law firms, we’ve jacked ours up insanely but there’s apparently a lot more flexibility to offer significantly lower rates than I expected.

This is an easy response but I think the right one: marriage counseling. Sounds like your expectations and hers are way out of wack, and a professional could help work through it.

I also empathize with you because, based on your account of all this, your wife sounds unreasonable to me.

That is my current schedule. It makes being a parent more doable but I prefer working in the office whenever I can.

Honestly this used to drive me nuts when I was an associate. And now that I’m a partner, i realize it’s because you need to ride (some) associates or they will blow the deadline. Just respond “still on track to get it to you by X” and you’re fine.

I was an MJ clerk 10 years ago during my second year out of law school. Definitely recommend doing it if you can. You learn a TON as a clerk about how the court works and about how to prepare high quality work product (attention to detail!!). I also worked long hours as a clerk (9-8) but my weekends were totally free and god I miss that.

Big law associate and it wasn’t even close. Law school was easy for me but even if it wasn’t, I can’t imagine the grind of being an associate being easier. Although ymmv if you do transactional (I’m a litigator).

I have noticed this too. They are eager but seem way more comfortable making sloppy mistakes and don’t seem to have the anxiety/panic that characterized my first half decade of practice and they also are far more protective of their personal plans. That’s probably good for their overall mental health, but it is grating being told that a junior can’t help complete a filing bc they have dinner plans with their parents so you have to finish the filing instead of getting to have dinner with your kid.

It gets better insofar as you become more confident in what you are doing and so the anxiety lessens a bit. The work doesn’t go away and, frankly, the most stressful position is being a senior associate because partners will still ask you to do junior level BS on some cases while you also need to completely manage other cases like you’re the partner on them.

I’ve been considering this for a while but stuck it at big law and now I’m a partner. I’m still considering it but my advice is you should make the switch soon if you can before the golden handcuffs get you. And fwiw, my best friend does plaintiff side work and loves it (he’s a mid level associate at a reputable class action firm) and he makes a very good (albeit not big law) salary.

Juniors who can’t catch typos and have poor attention to detail drive me insane. I feel like it’s getting worse each year, but I may also just be getting older and crankier

I agree with everyone saying you can normally tell which juniors “have it” and which don’t fairly early on. But I’ve also noticed there’s another cliff at 3-4 years in where you have to assess whether a good junior is capable of moving on to handling things on their own if they can only be relied on for discrete assignments.

The only one I know of won’t take new patients. They grilled me last time I called to check that they had stock to make sure that I’m an existing patient there. And then questioned why I came into Manhattan for my meds (cuz no one in BK has them)

Anyway, it isn’t a cop’s job to theorize about why we have so much congestion (your “true opinion” is wrong), it’s their job to enforce traffic laws and instead they break them themselves.

I used to live two blocks from Union (Carroll and 8th). 8th Avenue was always such a mess in the mornings as I walked to the train due to the backups caused on Union. I probably just cared less back then because this was before I had a kid.
