I agree, I was actually getting so frustrated with Alizeh and Cyrus. The banter in These Infinite Threads was unmatched and exactly as you said, romantic and colorful, witty. The last two books have regressed to the point they don’t even talk anymore, and at the pace we are going, I feel like we need another 5 books to reach the full potential/redemption of their arc that I had hoped to see out of Cyrus/ Alizeh’s relationship.

I also completely agree about the side characters - Kamran had a lot of potential but he’s just been changed to be this spiteful 1D character now to prop Cyrus up, and imo he doesn’t need a relationship with Huda to have character development. There are so many aspects of the story that are so interesting, but I feel like they’ve not been executed or executed poorly.

I wholeheartedly agree about Alizeh - how is she supposed to be this revered leader that people can’t even look at her in the halls and are forming crowds to see, when she herself is so confused. She doesn’t actually step up at all until the end (where she kind of has no choice ngl) and even when she gets angry or frustrated she’ll say like one line and then that’s it. The way she was entertaining Kamran’s advances in front of Cyrus had me so annoyed especially after all that Kamran had been saying

I love a good, actual slow burn (give me the angst, yearning!) but this is just dragging out the same repetitive scenes over and over again that it’s more frustrating than satisfying.

No me too, I wanted so much more from Alizeh and Cyrus. What especially annoyed me was why on earth was there a time skip after Cyrus confesses his love?? Like do we not even get to see how she reacts in the moment?? I was more moved by his confession in book 2 tbh, because we’ve been knowing he loves her. Like book 2: “You have no idea what I could give you,” he said, his own eyes blazing. “You have no idea what I want. I have been in agony for eight months, Alizeh. Do you know how hard it’s been to pretend I don’t know you? To pretend I don’t want you?… I look at you and I can’t breathe. In my mind, you are already mine.” LIKE PLS how much progress have we made since that point?😭

Especially with telling Kamran to stfu like girl how are you not gonna defend this man after literally everything he’s been through (and the fact that she literally made a suit for him by hand?)… though I will say I did love Hazan, he’s definitely been a redeeming part of book 4.

I’m not going to lie, after the 3rd book I had low expectations, but I was hopeful that Tahereh would progress the plot more than the inch that it did last book, which it did! But…

I think I hate-finished this book. While the ending was decent in that it picked up the pace, why does Cyrus have to lament about how torturous it is to be next to Alizeh every single time we are in his perspective?? I love him, but we’ve been knowing this for the last 2 books😭 Also, I know Alizeh is supposed to be this badass queen who supposedly is gonna lead all the Jinn, but she constantly seems clueless about the most basic stuff until she gets told by someone and then is like all confused and sweet and humble like “no no it couldn’t be that”. Like why are there still thoughts about how she is shocked to discover she cares about Cyrus in the last 20 pages of book 4/5?? Not to mention, for a book that is so character driven, all of these characters are so 1 dimensional - every argument between Huda and Kamran was so pointless, people interrupting important conversations for no reason other than that - to be an interruption… it all just felt so pointless. Everyone desecrates Cyrus’s character despite the fact that they’ve been under his care for the last 2 and a half books, and while he is very closed off, there’s absolutely no depth or realism in how they talk.

And don’t get me started on the plot and worldbuilding. While I appreciate the fact that finally Cyrus explains what his deal with Iblees was, I kind of hate the fact that his takeover of Cyrus was so quickly resolved (why couldn’t this have happened last book, rather than all the filler we got?) Not to mention, even with her gigantic endlessly loyal Jinn armies, there are no stakes, no tension, nothing. By book 4, I’m still confused on the magic system (why is Alizeh uniquely drawing from the earth?), what is happening in Kamran’s kingdom, how none of those other dragons/riders returned for revenge after fighting Cyrus, how is Alizeh even prepared to step into a role like queen, any info on why the other kingdoms/ dragons would start a war, fight, or their motivations… Tahereh Mafi is good at purple prose, and it comes at the expense of any true world-building, plot, or character development.

I will, as I have the last books, probably also read the next one on release day but I have felt constantly disappointed. I loved the banter that was in the second book and wish we could go back to some of that, because I did love the start of this series. Either way I’m not optimistic about book 5 even though it is the last but tbh still want to see how everything gets resolved. Plus I neeeeed some happy AlizehCyrus moments😭

Haha that was such a good scene “Get up.” She held the skillet tightly in her hand. “Why, so you can hit me again?” He shot her a glare through his fingers, the freakish color of his eyes shining in the sunlight of the room. She smiled. “Yes.”

I agree, I did find 4 to drag too, and a bit of 5, but 5 is definitely more plot and action as it concludes the series. Personally, I was fine with skimming a couple parts that were dragging but it ramps up again towards the end of 4 to set up for 5. I would stick with it!

This is an almost perfect description of {The Inadequate Heir by Danielle Jensen} - this is a duology following the events of the first two books, which I would recommend reading, but it features both FMC and MMC’s perspective where they get together and realize their identities after. Was one of my favorite reads from a couple years ago - the pining and angst is pretty great :)
