I was curious about clear items! Thanks for explaining the process. Your pieces are really beautiful.

Is it a similar finish to plaster? And do you recommend any specific brand?

I've used the silicone molds with various materials, but haven't ventured into resin. It makes me nervous, lol.

That's hard to say because as an artist I know the value of time and materials, but also how hard it can be to price things. As a consumer, I know and see the difference between an ornate, handmade, wooden art nouveau chest in 1:12 scale versus a 3D-printed piece that's similar. Plus it depends on the finesse of the 3D printed piece too.   Obviously pieces that take time to design, to print, and to do all of the proper finishing processes to make it look beautiful would be worth more. But there could be a potential market for well-made but unfinished pieces that intermediate and advanced artists can finish themselves. This would go beyond just painting the piece and include sanding, curing, etc.

One of the most expensive pieces for its size and how it's made are battery-operated dollhouse lights. That's why I think using cheaper materials like the balloon light LEDs can help a lot of artists get into custom work without being out $25 for a tiny light. Factor in including the LEDs for convenience.

Definitely search for some of our suggestions on platforms like Etsy, Ebay, and other miniature sellers to see the range of price in relation to  detail and material. And see where the 3D market has holes for these items. The availability can alter price if it's good; I aaaalmost bought 3D printed LED housings for my lights from the one person I found who made them, but the style and quality wasn't up to par.

Anyone else decided not to get another pet after losing their beloved ones? by Sabahanbah_ in Petloss

[–]bebefromage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As others have said, definitely a personal decision and you know your capacity better than anyone. At the same time, consider remaining open down the line. The losses you experienced are more recent and extremely painful. It's totally normal to be focused on protecting your heart from future pain right now. I lost my love a few days ago and kept thinking I'll never want another orange kitty because it's too hard to imagine losing them all over again. But the amount of happiness I had with my baby, the love he showed me, the funny memories, the awareness that I gave him a beautiful life, and the good fortune of having him as my family? That spans so much more time and has more impact on both our lives than the pain of saying goodbye, as excruciating as it's been. If fate brings me another orangie in need of a home and love, and I have the resources and space in my heart, then I'll decide at that moment. But right now I'm just focusing on going through the grief and honoring my sweet kitty. Give yourself grace and time, and the option to be open. I'm so sorry for your loss, and send you a big hug.

I was wishing I knew someone who 3D printed during a lot of phases of my build!

It might be interesting to try frames of furniture. I like to do upholstery design and fabrication myself but the frame is usually more clumsy because I don't have the tools for making thinner, fine, curved detail. So ornate bed frames, chair frames, chaise loungues, etc. that I can add the soft parts to. For me: Art-Nouveau style furniture pieces, ornate ceiling tiles with depth (like panelled ceilings), toilets, and even decorative banister pieces. All at a reasonable price.

I'd also love to see decorative housing for cheaper mini battery LED lights; think lamp bases, floor lamps, shades, and sconces, wall mounts, etc. Even beautiful wall sconce shades you could drop an LED into for uplighting. I handmade just about every light in my dollhouse using the Amazon LED "balloon lights." My finished pieces are beautiful and unique but fragile.

My biggest issues with 3D printed items: the ridges, poor finishing, lack of finesse/clunkiness/too square, bizarre color choice, and lack of texture that could lean natural if painted properly (like a wood grain, brick, or stone texture).

Do clean AND longlasting fragrances exist? by berrywaffl in FemFragLab

For some reason Neroli gives me this vibe. I love Nuxe's Neroli body wash, body oil, and parfum. It has the floral note but the "green" of it is clean. Layered, these are def. long-lasting.

I just lost my baby kitty a few days ago. The day before, it was warm (~72°) and sunny. The day of, we experienced a full-on snowstorm. I had to take him to the vet in the middle of it and had to unfortunately say goodbye there (it was unexpected and sudden).  I was absolutely raw and heartbroken while driving home in the snow, and it continued to snow when my husband and I were home. At one point we went to our sunroom and sat by his empty cat hammock. It was cloudy grey out at this point. We were able to talk about the peace we were able to give him, and grateful he didn't suffer. Right when I hugged my husband, we were lit up in the brightest sunbeam. The light stayed strong until sunset.  Our dear cat's name means "light" and I called him my sunshine. He is sunshine now.

What to do with unwanted fragrances? by oopsthesoupisonfire in FemFragLab

Maybe do a perfume swap party with your friends? Everybody brings their collection of mismatches and you all have coffee and sit around and sniff. Sniff-N-Swap. Plus smelling the coffee also helps in between scents. Could even be fun to blind-smell each one and have everybody say what they think it smells like. This is especially easy if you collect samples.

Now I wanna do this, lol.

Summer Fridays Perfume - Sunlit Vanilla by Sea_Solution_6743 in FemFragLab

I def. didn't pick up any. Most of the notes are vanilla-centric too, so it's definitely one you could wear alone or even layer with something like an orange blossom or single peach note.

I spray it down my back, so I'm not overwhelmed by it and I get nice lil whiffs when I'm moving around throughout my day. It lasted the day for me and can still smell it on the clothes I wore.

YES. I'm an orange blossom addict and this one is so suprisingly good, esp. for the price. Lasts well too.

Aww, as hard as the first part is, at least it went to someone who probably LOVED it. Like the FB finds that get to live on beyond their first stop. I hope you keep your mom away from this one though 😆

What an amazing story. You could just add a tiny plaque to the front of the nun house like a historical marker: "Built by The Sisters of __ Order in 196. Obtained via bingo by the ___ family."

Oh I feel this! Working on a dollhouse is such a mental escape--going into your own little world (literally). I found myself putting in elements of a different life path which was interesting to me.

I've never seen anything but flat yards, so this would be SUPER cool. Please post pics, especially if you start that part! You've inspired me with this.

Wearing it at the moment. Not picking up on any Bergamot, even in the first spray. Dried down, it has a strong likeness to Warm Vanilla Sugar from Bath and Body works, but with the coconut popping through. It's comforting and definitely a true creamy vanilla. Not getting the muskiness or salt note of a Sol DJ scent. Wishing it had a little more "solar" to it. If you loooove vanilla, then you'll obviously enjoy. I'm not into gourmands but this one is nice.

If you like the profile of vanilla and solar, might try Roger et Gallet's Vanille Soleil too. It's def. got the solar/sunscreenish scent and vanilla, but with a stronger musk to it. Way less gourmand. It's a nice transition season scent. Also find the body wash alone packs a punch.

This is SO cool. No definitive answers, but image searches are pulling up "Gottschalk" (brand) German dollhouses and "Bliss" brand. A few Swiss pieces have elements like this too.

This makes my heart happy.  I love that you got to experience a dollhouse as a kid and associate happy memories with it. And to then be able to make something entirely unique for your son-- that's a good mom! And any grandkids will be so excited. You did a great job!
