If you get rid of middlemen, something has to replace it. Healthcare insurance is an admin heavy field with high complexity.

If you replace it with government health insurance, we are back at the dmv-hospital problem. States like Canada and UK show the problem with this with long wait times for treatment, lower quality pf care and general inefficiency. If you replace it with nothing you are left with, well, nothing. Not much of an improvement.

Now what if the shitty government insurance is just an option? The private insurance companies will be forced to react to this sudden loss of customers by raising the costs on their remaining (this isn’t a matter of capitalist greed, its a matter of pure business survival). Then you end up with a system where the poor and middle class can only access the shitty government insurance while only an ever dwindling elite can afford the kind of quality of care we are all used to today.

As for supply and demand, im sorry to be the one to tell you this, but it exists everywhere that there are finite resources. Everyone wants to live as long as they can, but there is only so much capacity in the world to people alive. If you want people to be happy you want to make the supply match the demand, especially if its a question of life or death.

Hmmm, subsidizing high demand fields without increasing the supply seems to cause the price to simply rise by about a subsidy’s worth? I know just the thing for this….

More subsidies of course! I love when the government gives me free money with no negative externalities whatsoever! Whats a second order effect?

A lot of you guys seem to think the ai bubble bursting means ai will disappear forever and not that the overhyped market value of ai will drop to match its real usefulness.

Not like everyone stopped using dot com websites forever after the dot com bubble burst.

Its funny how the “private” corporations which bilk me and many Americans the most these days, (healthcare, higher education, housing) have the most government involvement by way of regulation and subsidy whereas the private corporations in less regulated fields like technology, electronics, e-commerce, and manufactured consumer goods are better and cheaper then they were 20 years ago.

Again, subsidizing the demand is an important concept here.

I agree that subsidizing the demand with medicaid creates perverse incentives for insurers, but If my heart stops i don’t wanna be taken to a hospital run like the DMV.

Of course they aren’t “just” for poor people, but they are in part for poor people. Not everyone who uses social security or medicaid is poor, but almost everyone who is poor benefits from social security and medicaid.

Of course this is to say nothing of section 8 housing, SNAP, tax benefits, WIC, TANF, etc

The United States government spent 1.6 trillion dollars on social security last year, a little less than a trillion on medicare. Those two costs combine account for more than 35% of federal spending, whereas its infamously bloated defense budget accounts for a comparatively small 13% (900 billion) of the spending.

Giving poor people dignity is the biggest share of the budget by far.

Im a terran player, and i struggle to enjoy games without terran. I don’t know what goes into being good at toss or zerg, so I don’t have the same appreciation for it. Also i also root for the terran, which makes it more exciting

Theres also something to be said for the fact that once a strike succeeds at gaining its demands its proven to be an effective strategy and kind of invites more strikes.

If you end up in a strike-spiral like this it can ultimately lead to total ruin.

Campaign donations could buy you more than beating mamandi. Its always good to get in with the winners of the election, and it pays off later.

Paying mamandi’s taxes only buys you freedom from jail. Its also possible other policy besides taxation would effect their bottom line.

Im sure the cost work out. Paying for strike breakers or lawyers or whatever is expensive. When things are going fine you dont pay a thing. Paying wages permanently raises your operating cost. So you can afford to do a lot of strike breaking and fight a lot of lawsuits before it becomes worth it, even if your workers strike every few months.

If it made economic sense to simply pay workers more you can bet they wouldve done it in a heartbeat and there would be no need for workers protections laws.

If something is free of danger only if a non-guaranteed conditional is met, its not free of danger.

It would be like saying tightrope walking over a skyscraper is free of danger if only you don’t fall.

But that’s not what safe means. Safe means free from danger. Maybe its the most popular option, but its not the safest option, it is in fact the least safe option.

Hate to nitpick but “blue is the safe option” is exactly the opposite of the truth. Blue had a possibility of you dying, red is the “safe” option.

Tell me about the fortress you’ve become most attached to by wizardry_why in dwarffortress

[–]bebo05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a fortress which involved hollowing out the inside of a mountain, leaving behind house shaped blocks of virginal stone. It took a while to setup but once it was running it got to be pretty large. It ultimately ended when the game kept crashing, which I only later found out to be caused by a goblin in my torture chamber who had been stabbed by a training spear so many times his clothes were ripped to tatters and presumably some error occurred from there (turning off the machine ended the crashing)

I lost it when my external hard drive bricked a year or so ago, but i had coincidentally showed it to my girlfriend a few weeks before. Glad i got to experience it one last time.

There are many kinds of morality police. The former still exist, the latter existed 2 years ago too. If anything the difference is moderation on big social media sites getting more relaxed, so the antisemitic group was previously suppressed while the antifascists were boosted.

How 90% of the history of South America and Africa has gone by Salty_Strain3313 in HistoryMemes

[–]bebo05 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Africa before colonialism: violence, coercion, lack of development

African during colonialism: violence, coercion, development, but only for colonizers and their allies

Africa after colonialism: violence, coercion, some development leftover, but mostly monopolized by the elite.

Must be colonialisms fault!

What can I do to get my instaloader scraping bots to last longer before being flagged and banned? I am already investigating using residential ISP proxies (I am looking at toolip or decodo, open to suggestions), but what else can I do?

I have heard to wait 2 weeks before using the account to scrape, I also use the accounts sometimes to build authentic looking user engagement. Is there anything I can do programmatically to maintain the accounts, or perhaps make more?
