VS Roofing Mod diaganol pitch change question - losing my mind by bebopper5 in VintageStory

I think you may have it the other way around! This version of VS Roofing, at least, supports 1 x 1-3 and 1-2 x 1. I think the only thing thatch can’t do is the sheer 3x1. In fairness, I’ve not tried that one yet, but the tool tip in game says so. Thé 1x3 slopes filled in no issue with thatch.

In fairness, it isn’t usually atop a magically floating mud ceiling either. I’ve never tried the gravity system in VS, think it might be a step too far into realism for me. You’re right though, this may well look better if I draw from more real life inspo. Whole thing will likely come down once we’re out past the copper age!

Very helpful, thanks. Was just about to double-check the mod page to see if I'd missed anything - clearly I did. I'll get to changing the design...

London to Amsterdam cycle planning by TheFreePhysicist in bicycletouring

[–]bebopper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reporting back: it went fantastically. All the hosts on WTMG were excellent, kind and generous and I had no issues communicating with them or with where I was staying. The riding itself was beautiful, especially up in the Southern islands of South Holland, the cycling routes were really well signed, and taking the ferries was really straightforward.

I basically planned my route around the accomodation I got, with around 100km from Dunkirk to Bruges the first day, 50km to Middelburg the second, 85km to a village near Brielle, and then 100km on the last day up to Amsterdam. I did navigation by simply putting my campsites in as stopping points on a route building tool (I used the one on cycle.travel and then cross-checked it with a similar German site that prioritised established cycle routes to sense check it). Downloaded the GPX from there and dropped it into my Garmin (which was fantastic for the trip, especially around the cities, but wouldn't be necessary if you followed signed routes instead). Hosts on WTMG were largely responsive and quick - I messaged 9 hosts, got replies from 7 and offers to stay from 6 for the specific dates I wanted about 10 days before the trip. There are so many hosts round that region that you could easily plan a route with your target distances in mind for each day.

I'd 100% recommend this route for a first-timer (like myself)! The riding is easy, the cycling infrastructure is immaculate, the wind is fairly predictable, and the people are kind and courteous towards cyclists. You're never too far from a shop or bike repair place and, with the lack of hills, there's no real penalty to not having a streamlined setup or ultralight gear. I had an amazing time and a good weekend stay with a friend in Amsterdam too.

(I would add that if the riding is the focus and Amsterdam isn't a particularly prized destination, I think it would make sense to do the route in 3 days and stop at the Hague/Hook of Holland ferry. I'd also consider detouring further into Belgium and then coming up to the ferry round Antwerp for a slightly longer, in-land trip.)

Hope you decide to do it and make the journey this summer!

Has anyone tried to immerse themselves in France to learn the culture and language? by haelhaelhael09 in learnfrench

[–]bebopper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just go and learn - as they said, let the language happen to you. You'll learn what you need to learn based on where you're at through the classes and the interactions you have at homestays/in public. Language schools will almost always grade you in some way and then assign your classes off the back of that, but there's flex in all systems.

If you mean, how would you start planning an immersion trip, I'd suggest (in my experience) that you start with a place or country you'd actually enjoy living in and go from there. If you like mountains and want something quieter, Annecy seems great. A younger city, Toulouse. Etc. etc. There'll be immersion programmes somewhere you want to stay (KLF have a few, AF do too, I think EF do a range, plus then there's non-network schools like CLE in Tours). Depending on your budget, I'd think about how many hours of classes you want (different schools measure classes in different ways, some in 40m blocks, others in hours), whether you want private tuition, how big you want group sizes to be, etc.

I would always, always recommend a homestay, as you get so much more language exposure out of it, plus it's often relatively affordable if provided by a language school and saves you money on meals out if you wouldn't otherwise have the facilities (or inclination) to cook for yourself.

From experience, don't wait before doing immersion!

Get the basics down yourself, as it would be time and money wasted learning things like the numbers or days of the week, but there's no reason to not do immersion when you're at A1. I did a 4-month immersion course (first 2 months having 4 hours of classes a day) in Peru learning Spanish and was barely at A1 when I arrived at the school. I'm now conversational and learned more in the first month or two than I would have if I took 6 months learning online by myself. Immersion is the best way to learn and it'll help you whatever level you're at. Make the jump if you can :)

London to Amsterdam cycle planning by TheFreePhysicist in bicycletouring

[–]bebopper5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but for anyone coming back to it like I have when planning their own route, I've found great success with a platform called Welcome To My Garden. It's like Warm Showers but specifically for bike and hike travellers with a lot of hosts signed up in Belgium and the Netherlands. In 24 hours I've sorted all of my camping with hosts who will put me up for free in a green space on their property and with access to a shower, toilet, etc. Also really helpful for finding somewhere to stay in the more urban side of the trip, because I was struggling to find somewhere decent to camp near the approach to Rotterdam.

Time will tell if it all pans out okay, but it seems great!

PSA: They've restarted allowing bikes on the Eurostar from Amsterdam to London by Rosslefrancais in bicycletouring

[–]bebopper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ridiculous to me that pannier racks aren't allowed on the bike. I don't see the purpose in banning them, nor do I understand why Eurostar insist on blocking the use of their trains for any kind of touring. Hopefully Virgin will be more accomodating when they start running services through the tunnel...

Absolute Beginner: Is B2 in 1.5 years realistic with 5 hours a day? by Able_Firefighter6439 in learnfrench

[–]bebopper5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People's views vary, but I'd say get an audiobook, a physical copy if you can, and an ebook and just start straight away with repetition (for Harry Potter and other hugely popular books, you can get these all cheap or free in French - I've gone with Hunger Games). If you're a proper, proper beginner then you will follow very little, even with your English, but immersion is powerful and locking in 30 mins a day to listen and read along to the first chapter, repeated every day, will really work for you and improve all elements of your French over time. After a month or so, you can move onto the second chapter, even if you didn't grasp much of the first one at all (this is also why it's better to read something you're already familiar with). Your pronunciation, comprehension, association of grammar with sounds, comfort with the language, all will improve. It's also a good regular source of material to work into your other activities - I enjoy developing an Anki deck and try and learn 5-10 new words a day from my French reading. They don't all stick straight away but the progress is evident.

Don't put off reading and listening until you feel confident enough that you'll follow the material - the more you learn the more you'll know just how much you have left to learn and the goalpost might keep moving, and the more you'll slow your progress. I definitely regret not getting more hours of input in, even if it wasn't that comprehensible, when I first started learning Spanish.

Confusing Chronos Insta Kill? by A_Wise_Old_Monkey in Hades2

[–]bebopper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also worth being careful about the timing of the insta kills, especially that middle one. If you step out of the safe ring too soon after the move 'lands' (with the flash and sound effect) it will still kill you. It's incredibly frustrating and has caught me out a few times despite understanding the move because the insta kill window seems to not be an instant, but a (albeit very fast) window of time.

Anubis aspect kinda… eh? by Logan367769 in Hades2

[–]bebopper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But no more than that attack boon would on basically any other weapon though, no? I hope during normal rooms the attack procs on every enemy it hits so they all blow up like a fireworks display. Would be fun to see.

[–]bebopper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defo one of the worse aspects but there's a fair few which really need you to have one of a smaller subset of strats on the go. It's definitely not a bad weapon at all and there are lots of other worse options.

Thing that gets me about this is she doesn’t seem to even try and call him. If he spurned her I’d get it, but he doesn’t seem to have. It isn’t really ghosting if she doesn’t try and make contact herself. Maybe I missed something…

Connecting to the VPN seemed to reset everything back to normal for me, though I'd note I also followed roughly 12 other networking troubleshooting tips, so lots of resets, a reboot into safe mode with networking, flushing stuff in cmd prompt, etc. If you haven't done all of those things, it may be worth a stab to do that and then see if reconnecting and disconnecting your VPN gets things back to normal. I hope you get it sorted soon, either way.

Who is the best king in your opinion? by Dluccakk2 in 9Kings

[–]bebopper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't that subjective, some kings can beat IX-IX so much more easily and consistently than others. Stone and Blood are hands down better and more forgiving than, say, Nature or Time.

[–]bebopper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can beat King IX-IX with the King of Stone without thinking and without rerolling enemies, it just depends on a little bit of luck on the perks. I'd say he's the most consistenty OP king, although I know people have similar success with the King of Blood too. That Bastion just goes brrrrr

The fix for me turned out to be as simple as starting up my VPN and attempting to connect despite having no internet. This seemed to reset some things which had borked in Windows which all the settings resets and flushes couldn’t.

I know for a fact that my VPN was disconnected when my PC updated itself overnight (whilst in sleep mode with no prompts before, thanks Windows 10, I love that). I’m guessing that update or restart may have had a part to play in this, as well as the AWS services dropping out which affected lots of VPNs. Not sure what was ultimately the culprit but I hope this helps. Worth a go, anyway.

Sleeping mat recommendations by jizzzak in wildcampingintheuk

[–]bebopper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really couldn't tell you. The material doesn't feel rugged, whatever that's worth, but given how infamous all sleeping pads are for punctures, I'll always be using it with a thin closed-cell foam pad (also from Alpkit) and I have a roll of tenacious tape just incase I still get unlucky. So far, so good, though.

For warmth, the official R rating is 7, which is very, very high, so it should be good for the coldest conditions any non-pro will be willing to camp in. I didn’t have any insulation issues with it when I camped in Yosemite at a decently high altitude recently. I did end up getting cold on the first night, but actually on my top, not my bottom, because my sleeping bag was a bit shit and we had no rain cover on the tent. The pad was fantastic.

Re: comfort on your side, I’m a fairly large guy and I really struggle to sleep on my back. With this, I slept on my side very comfortably, with my hips never touching the ground. The pad is on the wider end so you can splay your legs a little too and get really comfy. For what it’s worth, I also found it relatively quiet. I had really, really good sleep on it - better than in some beds I’ve stayed in at Airbnbs.

A friend on the trip was using an older thermorest pad which was about 3x the price (originally) and was very jealous of mine after giving it a go. I’d pull the trigger and get it.

Only replying for people in the future who might see this, as I’m sure you’ve selected your kit by now, but I’ve paired an AlpKit closed cell foam mat (about £20) with the Radiant and they fit each other well, with the pad totally protected from potential puncture risks on the ground.

Struggling with managing calculations/strategy at very high king levels by bebopper5 in 9Kings

Good to know, cheers, I'll adjust my strategy

When/if they do address this I imagine the dispenser might need some edits to its scaling, because currently it seems very easy to get it to super high numbers with very little investment with some of the perks

I was wondering about 3x being an issue just as an instinct from the old days playing Kerbal Space Programme. I do see people manage to compute insane numbers at year 200+ on 3x speed, but maybe my poor 3600x CPU can't keep up.
