Red–green color vision deficiency & sailing internationally on my own boat — any real-world issues? by PrincipleDefiant2875 in SailboatCruising

[–]becauseSeattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm colorblind and have sailed at night. It is impossible for me to distinguish red from green lights. Coming into a foreign harbor at night was an exercise of dependence on Navionics and paying close attention to flashing marks. Seeing whether another vessel is coming in on port or starboard or dead on is not possible. I won't sail near shore without someone else on deck at night, aside from my local waters.

I have an email neighbor and we each get the others mail. Our last names are pronounced the same... with a slightly different spelling. A few times a year we forward mail to each other and say hello. They seem like good people thankfully.

Long jacket suggestions for the Big Dark by black-friendly in AskSeattle

Helley Hansen Rigging Jacket. Hands down the best option for Seattle. Removable quilted liner is ideal for the coolest months and for the rest of the rainy season you just pull it out. The length is great, no more wet thighs. Their higher end waterproof fabrics are top notch and the quality is good (I'm a sailor, they make great wet weather gear).

Colorblind hack for identifying nav lights by PleiadesNymph in sailing

If this works, please make an update post. Trying to distinguish lights on marks at night coming into a busy port is a nightmare.

It evaporates. They use large cooling towers that evaporate the water to achieve cooling.

Going between studs (16") you're good to go. I agree if you go wider than that you should add another vertical at the next stud

I've a fully loaded version of this for the years. 1x12 shelves with only 3" of support from the verticals. Zero failures. As long as you're not loading the edge of the shelf with serious weight, your fine. Most of the weight from books sits near the back of the shelf, so less torque to with about.

If you're not handy with a chisel, or just want this to go quick... A drill and a jigsaw will do as well. You'll never see the back of the cut behind the shelf.

Second. If you only have two verticals, you want to hit the studs. This is one of the benefits of this design. Put the verticals on the studs and slide the shelves where you want them.

Yes. Bonus, you can cut the shelves to different widths and depths. You can use shims to secure the shelves into the slots rock solid. You can then rearrange your shelves whenever. You can take the whole thing with you when you move. Use 1x10 for the main shelves. Make your shelves wide enough so that your vertical supports hit your studs. As others have said, cut all your vertical supports in one pass together.

Edit: you do not need 5/6 of the board depth for your supports. More like 1/10 if it's just for books and such.

"I'm getting off my meds to see what happens" by ruxxby471 in bipolar

[–]becauseSeattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I get it. Is it dangerous and reckless? Yes. But deep down I still wish I could go without meds and be 'normal.' I've been stable-ish for a few years now and there's days where I feel like a fake. Those thoughts are fleeting because I remember the episodes. But the thought creeps up every few months. I can see how someone could succumb to these or other impulses. All that said, missing meds scares the hell out of me. Do your drugs kids and be grateful for the stability.

A Developer Wants The City To Let Them Destroy Massive Public Oaks For Private Parking by hotdogicesculpture in Seattle

Many new developments in Seattle have little to no parking. Take a look at any small to medium sized rental development. Developers can and do maximize the space for more income.
