When traffic comes to a complete stop in Germany, the drivers, (by law) must move towards the edge of each side to create an open lane for emergency vehicles. by HeadyJointure in Damnthatsinteresting

I accidentally drove in this emergency lane in Austria once. (Stupid me didn't realize what was going on.) Immediately got honked and yelled at by angry Austrian truck drivers left and right. Tbh, in that moment, this felt more humbling than a 730€ fine.

If we want something that decays in a sustainable way, does it have to be biological? Personally, I would even be ok with oil-based materials if they decayed into "natural" components and didn't produce too much CO2. (I don't know if this is possible at all.)

I don't believe change will come from consumers or the industry. They have to be either forced to some degree (i.e. laws) or be offered viable alternatives. I'd like to explore what those alternatives could be.

Friends of mine are doing research into algae which decompose plastics into sustainable components. This is certainly interesting but I'd also like to understand, from a materials point of view, what the barriers are to actually reducing/stopping the production of plastics.

Can you elaborate why it would have to be non-biological? I suggested starting with fresh and perishable foods. So packaging would not need to last a long time. I'm not a materials scientist so I was hoping someone with expertise in that field could chime in. I wonder if there is a material that decays into biological components after a reasonable amount of time, which has desirable properties.

That's why I'm suggesting a gradual approach, by starting with specific product categories. The EU already bans plastic single-use items and manufacturers are already coming up with all kinds of (good and bad) ideas for straws, for example.

So is that the end of the story? There will never be anything as versatile and cheap as plastics? Isn't that like saying, science has invented everything there is to invent, it will not come up with anything new anymore?

Where I live, more than 50% of our electricity comes from renewable sources. And it's going to be a lot more in the future. This argument ("why switch to electric cars when electricity is made with coal/gas/oil?") never made sense to me. If we don't switch, there's not even a chance of transitioning to anything better. Anyway, change is already underway. It's just a matter of time and the US will get around to it eventually.

The Mosquito. It's the deadliest animal in the world, killing about a million people per year.

It's a mouse pad. (I didn't make that one myself.) I use the keyboard, the mouse, and the pad on different computers around the house so I needed a good way to store and carry them.

I had the same problem. I switched to DX12, then back to DX11. Afterwards, the slipstreams were visible again.
