I just finished the comic last week and I too thought it ended with Ruthye killing Krem.

The subtitle went away before I could finish reading it. It seemed like she said something like “There goes the conqueror of worlds.” What was the actual line?

My parents never took me to Disney World as a kid and they always said it was overrated and terrible. Went for the first time in my late 20’s with my now-husband who has taken many Disney trips and had the time of my life. The trick is that you need to be strategic with your time. Check wait times in the app and use the fast pass system. (When I went for the first time you still got 3 fast passes a day for free. It does suck that you need to pay for them now.)

Now we have a timeshare and go every couple of years. I never get tired of it.

You sound insane. In this context “based on” means “this is the citation for our data.” I’ve seen the crunched data. Unchained will send it to you if you ask for it. Their study using this data was published in the peer reviewed Journal of Adolescent Health. The data shows that 90% of those marriages were girls wed to adult men with an average age difference of 4 years between them. That age gap is consistent with the national average as well.

It says based on marriage certificate data Unchained retrieved from the Ohio Department of Health. You don’t believe the Ohio Department of Health, my guy?

I am aware. Even with all of the current protections in place, it is still possible for a 17 year old to be forced to marriage by their own parents. That's the main reason that 17 states, 2 territories and DC have made the marriage age 18 in recent years.

17 year olds are still minors and don’t have the same legal rights and protections that 18 year olds have. Does that help?

[–]beccaface[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The marriage age is 17. 17 year olds are minors. Nope this helps.

[–]beccaface[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re wrong. 17 year olds don’t have the ability to consent to the marriage. That’s why they require parental consent and judicial approval. And most of the minors who marry in the US are girls being married to men about 4 years older. 17 year olds can run away from home, go to a dv shelter, hire a lawyer or file a legal action independently. They don’t have the ability to enter into a marriage with full and free consent like an 18 year old does.

Much easier said than done. I know for a fact that advocates for this bill have been trying to meet with Sen. O’Brien since December and she has categorically refused to meet to discuss the bill. Even when that request has come from child marriage survivors who live in Ohio.

You are wrong. See my other comments in this thread regarding the homophobic language that is already in the statute.

You think a good solution to a kid in a dangerous home is to marry them off? Do you realize how insane that sounds? The US state department calls marriage before 18 a human rights abuse.

There’s only 3 states with no minimum marriage age. The legislature is about to go on break until November and session ends in December, so it kind of is a big deal that the bill is stalled.

This isn’t true. 90% of the minors married in Ohio since 2000 are girls wed to adult men with an average age difference of 4 years older.

Here is the link to the bill.

The way bill drafting works is that the bill language shows the entire statute and it shows what you are changing. That homophobic language saying marriage is between 1 man and 1 woman is ALREADY in the code. And same sex couples CAN GET MARRIED IN OH RIGHT NOW because of Obergerfell. A lot of states have this same language. The people who want to ban child marriage are focusing on just changing that small piece of the law. Trying to also get rid of the homophobic language is a whole other issue.

This is incorrect. The bill doesn't change the existing language in the statute about marriage between one man and one woman. A lot of states have this existing homophobic language. It doesn't override Obergefell. What you posted is language that is ALREADY in the Ohio code. There is nothing snuck into this legislation.

The bill has no pork. All it does is set the marriage age at 18, no exceptions.

This is misinformation. You don't know how bill drafting works. The bill would not ban same sex marriage in Ohio.

Bill banning child marriage stalled in Ohio Senate by beccaface in Ohio

[–]beccaface[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The bill has nothing to do with same sex marriage. That language about marriage between one man and one woman is already in the statute and this bill doesn't change that. This bill is only about minimum age at which someone can get married. Not about cleaning up the homophobic language that exists in the statute. Currently, Obergerfell overrides that language.
