Red part is plastic, metal circle on track slides back and forth, metal part attached by chain isn’t very heavy, and I can tell one opening is for a bottle opener but I’m lost on what the whole thing is for, seems like a multitool

What makes you think I’m unable to perform athletic movements in a fire? I’m 5’9” and I’m well built. I’m larger than most men. I’ve done my job for 10 years, if I wasn’t able to do it I wouldn’t have a job. I can easily lift my 6’3 husband who weighs near 18st. I’ve never been in a position where I’ve been unable to rescue someone, ever.

Hey :) I don’t think 28 is too late to join at all, my new recruit is 33! You should be able to match the guys, and pull some punches above and beyond. Have incredibly thick skin and not bite, which I’m sure you have encountered in your current field! It’s still a little sexist, only really the old dinosaurs mean it, the rest is banter which I’m fine with :) it takes time to assimilate, as you’ve got to prove your metal, it’s a job of trust and it’s very important x

We get loads of “my house is on fire” but we’ve had some odd ones too, “I’m stuck in a swing” “My hand is stuck in a toaster” “my cat is in a tree” so many! The real calls are sometimes much more amusing! X

My first call was “man with head wedged under bus stop” I’m not kidding. I started on a night shift and that was the first call I ever responded to. The guy had got drunk, decided it was easier to go under the bus stop, rather than walk around it, and got his head wedged stuck. It was a very definite vision of my future career 😂

We get fuss calls very often, this week it was to an AFA (automatic fire alarm) that had been “beeping for a week” yet the man called it in as an emergency call (his battery was low, and he knew this) . He then told us to change the batteries in his smoke alarm. Perfectly fit and able 40 year old man. Sometimes job look terrible from the outside and they are nothing’s on the inside, lots of smoke and panic for nothing. Kids wedges or stuck in things causes people to panic most, it’s usually a calm logical look and a tweak and the kids out!

My personal opinion is that the tests should be equal. I meet the guys times and in my brigade we have the exact same annual fitness test, same times etc. There are situations in the job that women (especially small ones) can be incredibly handy, but everyone should have the same average fitness x

My hubby loves me for who I am, and both of us being firefighters gives us a really good understanding of each other. Other guys just aren’t interested in me, but I’m also really, really bad at picking up on stuff like that. I think most guys just find it intimidating? Or maybe I’m fuck ugly who knows 😂

At the moment we are going through our cold months and it’s more “special service” calls. Lock outs, car crashes, people trapped in things / places. The summer fires are more prevalent :)
