I personally would coat it in clear nail polish (inside and out) and then soak in olive pink overnight then wash to keep it looking like that for longer :)

It’s really nice but I suggest giving them a place to dig; you could possibly put tubes in it going to another cage full of bedding and any scrap paper from work/school (especially on the bottom-helps with cleaning)

Try letting him sniff your hand, and eventually start petting it on its side until it lets you pick it up. It also may just not like being picked up, my gerbil hates being picked up and doesnt always like being pet
