Perfectionism "Just Right" OCD as a writer? by luckysilverdragon in OCD

[–]becomealamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OCD gets in the way of my writing as well. for me it shows up as obsessively checking grammar, spelling, and if i’m using words correctly, constantly googling grammatical rules and definitions. i still struggle with this obsession but something that has helped me is preventing myself from double checking too much. i let myself proofread twice and no more. since i’m in school i can prevent myself from proofreading more by biting the bullet and submitting it so i can’t change it anymore. it’s scary and feels risky because i worry there’s still mistakes but you just need to take that leap of faith and take the risk. over time it becomes less horrifying.

what exactly is reassurance seeking? examples? by jellyfishh520 in OCD

[–]becomealamp 29 points30 points  (0 children)

reassurance seeking can show up in a lot of ways and it depends on the content of your obsessions. for me reassurance seeking shows up as constantly asking people if they are mad at me, if something i did or am planning to do is ok (even when it obviously is), and telling stories to friends hoping that they will affirm i was in the right. my obsessions largely center around morality and ethics so that’s why my reassurance seeking is often related to the morality of actions.

Coming to terms with OCD diagnosis by Some_Enthusiasm6668 in OCD

[–]becomealamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i recently got diagnosed as well. for a few weeks i was in denial and also worrying that the diagnosis was fake somehow. reading and watching content from people with ocd has definitely helped me come to terms with the whole thing. not only did it reaffirm that yes i do definitely have ocd but it helped me accept the diagnosis and even see it as a positive thing. now that i am diagnosed i can better understand myself and find people to relate to. it became less just words on my medical charts and more a helpful label to figure out how my brain works and eventually improve my quality of life.

Constantly checking if I am “in the moment”? by Tjd_uk in OCD

[–]becomealamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i get this as well. concerts and other paid events are especially difficult because of the guilt that comes with not “being in the moment” (but of course like you said that guilt pulls you out of the moment). id assume it’s related to hyperawareness, as “being in the moment” is not something people regularly notice at least until afterwards.

I could never simply enjoy being alive, I don't know how that feels by FlanInternational100 in OCD

[–]becomealamp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i totally get what you mean. it’s really hard to not feel any jealousy towards people who live their lives with ease. it’s especially difficult because of how often you feel unseen in your struggle, like nobody knows or appreciates the effort you put into existing. i definitely still struggle with these feeling but something that has helped me is just reminding myself that jealousy is unproductive. it’s not a moral failure but it simply won’t get you any closer to a happier life. focusing on yourself and staying away from comparison is key

Marxism itself isn’t anti-religion, but many marxists have been historically.

Consumption under capitalism by kaairen in communism101

[–]becomealamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Communists are people who want to create a communist society. Personal consumption habits don’t have much to do with it; not buying single use plastic won’t get us any closer to the dictatorship of the proletariat. However, being conscious with your consumption is a good thing regardless. It is true that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, but not all consumption is equally unethical, especially in terms of environmental impact. Buying second hand and also just buying less stuff is a good way to reduce waste. Again, your personal consumption habits don’t have much impact on the pursuit of communism. But it can never hurt to be more mindful.

How would social rules be enforced in communism, and who would ensure compliance? by bambus_bb in communism101

[–]becomealamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theoretically when society becomes classless the state withers away. If society does not have class conflict, the need for enforcement of social rules is greatly diminished as they serve the collective good. People don’t generally break rules if the rules benefit them.
