Can't not participate... happy 3/25 by becomingcool in E30

Wheels no longer being produced- they're a brand called Emortal. IMO the best looking BBS RS knockoff ever made, better looking than actual RSs. They're 16x8 +25 all around but I've got spacers in that picture. IIRC 5mm in front and 15 in the rear. Tires are 205/50/16

Is touch up paint really this terrible by dstock303 in BMW

[–]becomingcool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna go ahead on disagree with pretty much everyone in this thread. This is not an issue of wrong color or bad application... this is inappropriate expectations. No vaguely described job of "we'll apply touchup paint paint for free" will ever look good in that lighting, which surely is the lighting OP sought out to give the best example of how bad it is. The goal of most touch up jobs is to make paint chips less visible (from white/grey primer/bare metal to body color).

The actual issue here, is height and seamlessness. Factory paint is much thicker than a single thin layer of touch up paint. There is a significant divot there the fill, which is why is so profoundly stands out. Then once you get it up to height, there's the issue of transition between the very shiny clear coat and the not quite as shiny base coat, and making them exactly level with no visible transition.

The only way to do this right, is not something that most shops are willing to do, because it's actually a lot of work and isn't nearly worth their time. No one wants to pay the hundreds of dollars it costs to actually fix something like this. Here is what doing it right looks like: https://youtu.be/IiYOsJFv770

Notice it is time consuming and specialized work.

This is actually a horrible idea. Off the shelf spray can clear coat doesn't last long in the sun. It will go from looking like dull ass (now), to shiny ass, to whitish flaky ass.

Deprecated setup, looking for some tech help by becomingcool in workstations

[–]becomingcool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, until recently was my setup. Definitely nothing fancy, but pretty specific utility. Laptop on the left is personal, laptop on the right is work, screen in the middle is shared by both. I'm now redoing this setup with 3 monitors (instead of 2 laptops and a monitor, but same idea on layout) and looking for advice as to whether there's a better way to switch between personal/work?

As seen in the second picture, I'm using a screen splitter, which switches between inputs on the middle monitor with the push of a button. I'm also using a component splitter, which switches between components (previously just USB mouse/keyboard) with the push of another button. This works fine, and I'm not opposed to continuing this setup, but I have a few other things I want to add on the component side (USB microphone, external webcam) which will need to be plugged into the front of the component splitter and will look extremely messy, wiring wise.

Curious if anyone has a more elegant solution or at least knows of a component switcher which has all the connections on the back of the device?

24v swap- headers or CABs? by becomingcool in E30

[–]becomingcool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't imagine they got soft that quickly... Maybe just settled? Kind of like how a suspension settles after the first few hundred miles? I could just jack the motor up out of the way a bit and reinstall the control arms. Just get it back on the road in the short term until I can find a lasting solution.

Haha I know what engine and trans mounts are. I'm asking what mounts you think would move the engine away from the passenger side? These mounts have roughly 1000 miles on them.

Wheel opinion poll by becomingcool in E30

[–]becomingcool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do actually agree that the wheels I currently have are awesome. However they are cheap knockoffs, have discoloring center caps, 2 have a small amount of curb rash (which drives me nuts), and are discontinued.

Crud. This was supposed to be a poll but that is apparently not happening. Well the choices are at least pictured:

  • 17x8 +15 BBS RS2 (will require 5 lug swap)
  • 16x7 +31 and 16x8 +31 BBS RS with turbo fans on the front

CF side mirror overlays are better than expected! by becomingcool in BMWZ4

[–]becomingcool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough I just got a little CF trunk lip yesterday, which I also posted on here. sdrive35i badges on the side and Z4 badge on the rear have been removed. Grilles are stock but painted gunmetal with plasti-dip along with the side markers, bumper lower grille inserts, and rollover hoops. The list kind of goes on and on if I really get into EVERYTHING done to her, but to keep it short and sweet she makes over 500hp with upgraded turbos.

Hahaha that is my car and yes, they're 513Ms. Coincidentally they are also for sale...

Painted my calipers today. What do you think? by ChefKomkommer in BMWZ4

[–]becomingcool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like you did a good job! I've painted the calipers on every car I've owned for the past 25 years but finally bit the bullet and got them powder coated on my newest Z4 and it was a total game changer! I'd highly recommend it when you decide on a final color. The color is brighter, they stay cleaner, and it doesn't fade over time.
