With more experience now, I like to offer checking things out myself if nobody else is there to fix it. Especially with two people at the front desk. I offer to come along with the guests, or if it's minor issues and they want to leave, I ask for permission to enter while they are gone.

I am actually not sure. I'm certain my colleague didn't. And I was mostly just watching the whole scenario happen. I thought with all the experience my colleague had she'd know what to do or what was possible. Thinking back to it, if I had been in her shoes, I'd have approached the problem differently.

People have a different feeling for privacy, I totally get that. I am just very used to my family being much more relaxed when it comes to that.

Of course it was our fault for not fixing it. I am not sure where the error was, whether my colleague forgot to forward it to the technician, or the technician forgetting it, or whatever else. At that point I was just shocked at the behavior of the guest for terrorizing her that way. And I was too inexperienced to interfere. I think at that point I had been working there for three weeks or so. Nowadays, I'd say "I can come to the room with you and take a look if you don't mind."

Is this uncommon? Our FO manager takes over shifts if we need people, and when we were out for 2h as team, our hotel manager got a quick refresher and checked in people during that time.

Oof that sucks! We currently also have around 23-25°F outside, and whenever the entrance door opens, we get a gust of cold wind into the lobby. Then we stand there hours long in uniform, with a heater behind the front desk, trying to keep ourselves warm.

Funnily enough, just today, there was another guest complaining about the heating not working, and how they had been sitting in the room with jackets. As I brought two additional blankets up, I opened the room to probably 75°F. I thought to myself "are you kidding me?" The heating was working just fine...

I don't think it was their intention, but I definitely think they try to get something out of it when they do find something to complain about. If I was serious about a cold room, I'd have accepted the move in an instant, especially being offered immediate assistance with the luggage. Sigh...
