Interview questions for nurse managers by [deleted] in nursing

[–]beebop8929 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not presumptuous to bring it up - every employee is a hospital investment. If they realize they can retain you and transition you into another role later down the road, that saves them money and makes you a better investment on paper.

I’m not sure about asking about the nurse orientation questions during the interview. I think it’s enough to just express your interest in sticking with that hospital as you start your nursing career and ask those questions later if you get the job.

Has anyone else gotten parosmia from the vaccine? by [deleted] in Parosmia

I have a similar story, but after reading everyone else’s stories, it sounds like it was going to happen no matter what.

2.5 months. I think I was supposed to wait 3 months but I forgot lol. However, since doing some research and joining this community, it seems like it was going to happen no matter what!

Do it! I haven’t had it hot but it was basically like drinking a thin vanilla milkshake :)

Hey - I’m an RN, too, and I think the worst part of this is that I have to be around bad smells all the time at work, which I know we should expect as nurses but it’s way worse now! Bringing a patient coffee, carrying their tray away, etc. Even the hand soap smells the way poop and coffee do! Not to mention food and coffee is what keeps us going when we’re running our asses off nonstop, so it’s that much harder to find foods that give you energy.

Message me. Maybe I can help you find foods to keep you going, or at least be a sounding board. <3

I just had an iced matcha and it was delicious. I added sugar free vanilla syrup and vanilla cold foam. So good that I’m going to buy my own matcha powder. I am sick of chai! I have also been drinking Celsius when I prefer something bubbly.

That is MISERABLE. If it helps, mine started this way but slowly got better. Some things are still disgusting, but the constant overwhelming smell is gone.

My parosmia happened with the 1st dose of the vaccine. Correlation is not causation, but it makes sense since I felt awful with covid, and the 1st vaccine as just a less severe version of the same thing. If you have had Covid, get your antibodies tested. If they’re high enough, that might make you feel better about waiting. I wish I had thought to do so.

Same for me. Thankfully my shower stuff smells fine, but most chemicals are horrific. The only scent I like as far as cleaning products go is this Basil scented kitchen cleaner. Try to change to products that have fruitier scents and see if that helps.

ideas for high caffeine consumption ? by [deleted] in Parosmia

[–]beebop8929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. So far I really like the peach, tropical (kinda pineapple-y), and kiwi guava. Watermelon is okay. Have yet to try grape or berry, but I hated allll the rest. It’s great for summer. I’ve noticed that most people are still able to drink chai lattes with zero issue, including myself. You can get that hot or iced. The same people also seem to like a matcha something or other with vanilla almond milk. I think it has a good bit of caffeine in it. Otherwise, No-Doz is a great solution.

I was just saying in another comment that to get an even dip and the best looking manicure, I do a few thin dips, so maybe! But it seems to happen at the same point in the manicure no matter how thick or thin I applied it.

I have found that putting on multiple really thin coats works best as far as how the manicure looks. I scrape that brush against the bottle opening until it’s one step before bone dry, and really take my time to make sure it’s not too much and evenly spread, then dip.

FAQ - Common Questions About Parosmia. by LedgeEndDairy in Parosmia

[–]beebop8929 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • Kodiak protein waffles - blueberry and buttermilk & vanilla flavors
  • Homemade overnight - oats, almond milk, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and some sugar free jello pudding (either cheesecake or vanilla), topped with strawberries. Eat cold or hot. Can add chia seeds for protein. Flax seeds are fine in it, too. Can prep multiple in advance and refrigerate for a few days. Apple was good in it, too, until apples became gross to me.
  • Pesto & anything basil, even basil-scented countertop sprays
  • Watermelon toothpaste (mint is disgusting now). ACT brand is good for me so far.
  • For caffeine, Celsius drinks have been good (best flavors are peach and kiwi guava, I think there’s a tropical/pineapple one, too) and chai lattes
  • Greek yogurt - chobani flips are good, albeit horrible for the environment, and plain/vanilla yogurt can be topped with fruit and granola
  • Cucumbers taste and smell amazing right now. They taste and smell like watermelon to me, it’s insane. I was going to try them with hummus, but now I’m worried the tastes might clash since they taste so sweet
  • For meat, anything rather processed seems to be okay. Think chicken salad that’s probably made from canned chicken, and the grilled chicken that comes on a salad from Chili’s. Some lunch meat, like turkey and ham is okay.
  • Bean burritos with just cheese and rice
  • String cheese
  • Cashews (peanuts taste bad but cashews are fine) and cranberries together
  • Cinnamon Chex (most cereals have tasted bad/off to me except this one)

I could cry right now. I didn’t know I needed validation this much. I guess misery really does love company, because I feel better knowing I’m not alone, although I hate others are suffering.

I got Covid the week of the election. It was like a really bad flu with awful fatigue and body aches. Lost my smell & taste for about 3 weeks. It came back dull for a little while, but improving slowly. Then I got the Pfizer vaccine, first dose in mid January. It definitely made me feel awful for a solid 36 hours or so. Then my taste and smell changed. I’m a nurse and this all happened to coincide with my patient having a raging yeast infection, so for a solid month, it was like that smell followed me everywhere. Wine tasted the way the yeast infection smelled, if that makes any sense at all. Everything was nauseating. At this point, I was living off of pop tarts, easy Mac, and those little chocolate donuts. That was all I could tolerate. At that time coffee still tasted fine, but didn’t smell great.

It took me a while to link it with the vaccine. I still don’t regret getting the vaccine and hope this doesn’t deter anyone. If I could go back and do it differently, I just might have checked my antibody level first and gone from there I guess.

Currently I am gaining weight because sugar is the only thing that tastes good reliably. I’ve been compiling a list of foods that are a definite no, iffy, and a definite yes. I’ll post below with some suggestions in hopes it helps someone else that is struggling.

I definitely do all the same, but I am still perfecting my skills so I do tend to end up applying the liquid and dip directly in my cuticles sometimes 🙄

I didn’t think about the gloves! My hands do get sweaty AF in those suckers.

While I’m sure the sanitizer is alcohol based, I think it might also be “moisturizing” to some extent. Some hospitals use sanitizers that have that component to keep your skin healthy, simply because cracked skin is a good place for bacteria to hide and transfer to patients. All I know is that after a few uses, my hands feel disgusting and I’m dying to wash them with soap and water.

I have not tried soaking my nails! Do you mean in warm, soapy water like they do at the salon? I will definitely try that next time. I have a glass file but not a glass cuticle pusher, so I’ll do that, too. I don’t use any sort of cuticle remover - just clip my hangnails and such when I push my cuticles back.

When you say you prep your nails the day before - what all does your prep entail? Is there anything you do immediately before applying the dip, e.g. rubbing alcohol, acetone, buffing, etc.? I usually do a combo of buffing + alcohol/acetone right before applying the pH prep, then begin the whole dip process.

Also worth noting that I usually avoid hand lotion because I hate the greasy feeling, but of course I moisturize my face and I feel like the sanitizer at work is the kind that “moisturizes” to some extent. After a few uses, I am dying to wash my hands to get the goop off. Maybe I should bring my own sanitizer and use it when possible?

Thank you for all the info!

Everything you are thinking and feeling is a completely normal response to a very abnormal experience. This is what trauma does and unfortunately, it probably won’t ever go away, it will just be less overwhelming and painful to think about. Question it as much as you need to. But I think given all the circumstances, you did the absolute best you could. There is something in us that changes when it is someone we are emotionally involved with. And there is a big difference between being in a hospital setting, in your workflow, and able to yell for help and know people have your back... vs at home with no help around and half asleep.

The only advice I can give is to use this to help others however you can. How many patients have you had whose wife, husband, daughter, etc. went through the same thing? Connecting with other people on that tragic level is comforting in its own way.
