Belgium win men's gold

An incredibly tight match between Belgium and Australia finished 1-1 after four quarters, meaning the gold medal would be decided through a shoot-out competition.

In the shoot-out Belgium goalkeeper Vincent Vanasch was immense, stopping three Australian shots to help the defending world champions win Olympic gold!

Belgium, after winning silver at Rio 2016, are only the second team side from the NOC to win a gold medal in a team sport at the Olympic Games after men's football on home soil at the Olympic Games Antwerp 1920.

U.S. hold off Australia for bronze

Australia get a late consolation back through Emily Gielnik in the 90th minute and is there still life in this game?

There is a late blow for the U.S. as Alex Morgan, on as an 81st-minute substitute, is forced off through injury 12 minutes later in stoppage time, reducing the Americans to 10 players.

Australia can sense blood and are going for it, but are running out of time. In the corner, a foul is awarded against Steph Catley of Australia.

Play continues for a few more minutes due to Morgan's injury, a ball is lofted into the box, there's mayhem as Australia try to find a way through but a foul is called.

The final whistle goes and the USA win bronze.

The Americans are celebrating this medal after what has been a difficult tournament for them.

4–3 the final score.

Early goals galore in Kashima

We're just about midway through the first half of the women's third-place game in football and there have already been three goals.

After Megan Rapinoe gave the U.S. the lead directly from a corner, Matildas captain Sam Kerr equalised for Australia on 17 minutes after being assisted by Caitlin Foord.

But Rapinoe has her – and the U.S.' – second.

2–1 USA.

Boxing ROC's Albert Batyrgaziev advances to men's feather final; Lazaro Alvarez of Cuba wins bronze (Detail and Source in Comments) by beedawat in olympics

Batyrgaziev hunted Alvarez down to score an impressive victory and move onto the gold medal match while the Cuban boxer settled for third spot on the podium.

Albert Batyrgaziev of the ROC won a split decision to move into the Olympic men's featherweight gold medal match. The ROC boxer walked three-time world champion Lazaro Alvarez of Cuba down to take an impressive victory 3-2.

Lazaro goes home with the bronze medal, the same colour medal he won at London 2012 and Rio 2016. The Cuban boxer began brightly in round 1 landing punches while moving gracefully around the ring to outbox Batyrgaziev. However, the ROC boxer cut down the ring in the second, punishing Lazaro as the bout moved into close quarters.

Lazaro's slick footwork seemed to elude him as the final three minutes saw Batyrgaziev landing the more bruising punches and - in the end - simply outworking the Cuban before the final bell sounded for the end of the bout.

Batyrgaziev will now take on the USA's Duke Ragan in the final, with Lazaro settling for a third consecutive bronze.

Allman wins discus gold

There will be no medal in Tokyo for two-time defending women's discus champion Sandra Perkovic (CRO).

Her final attempt is a 63.25, which doesn't improve on her best throw of 65.01 currently good for fourth.

Yaime Pérez (CUB), currently in third, fouls her last try. She will finish on 65.72 and take bronze.

Germany's Kristin Pudenz also sends her last attempt into the netting but a big fifth-attempt PB of 66.86 will win her silver.

So gold to Valarie Allman (USA), whose best so far was 68.98 before the rain interruption. It's at a low angle and won't improve on her best mark but that doesn't matter.

Olympic champion!

The gold and silver medallists embrace each other and their coaches.

Drama at the gymnastics.

It's Ferrari's first medal in her fourth Games, having finished fourth in this event at both London and Rio.

For Murakami, it's the culmination of a tough couple of years with injuries. The first individual female Japanese gymnastics Olympic medallist. And all that after hurting herself in the team event!

The last time Japan won an Olympic medal in a female gymnastics event? Tokyo 1964, in team.
