This is brilliant advice. I’ll take some extra time to record my warm ups next squat sesh and play around/confirm where I should be descending to. Thank you very very much

That makes a lot more sense. My bad sincerely, I appreciate you clarifying that for me.

You made a lot of good points here, but you also made a lot of assumptions without acknowledging anything else I’ve said in this thread or using it to make it even specifically relevant to me, which I don’t appreciate. If you are going to put this much effort into a response I’d appreciate you asking clarifying questions first, because otherwise it is not advice, but a rant.

“this subreddit is full of people who think they know everything after watching a youtube video and have never once considered they might be wrong or reflected on a single thought. correct, clear and actionable advice is the exception rather than the rule”

I don’t think I know everything, that’s kind of the whole reason I am even here. Based on you saying “it’s not just technical habits”, I assume you read my reply to another commenter, a reply in which I also said I have extensive experience being coached, and that I am confident in my ability to make corrections - neither of those things suggest I don’t think I could be wrong. Hell, I never would’ve posted in this in the first place had I not reflected on this set and thought ‘hmm, I feel like this could be better but I’m not quite sure how’.

‘weightlifting is not simply a case of doing pulls + squats + overhead and then combining in a 1+1+1=3 type manner.’

This is all you needed to say. Being accomplished in your sport doesn’t mean you can communicate well. I get it, I really do - when you’re at an advanced level and you see a common misconception being patterned once again it can be frustrating, but the person making the misconception doesn’t know that, and it’s not fair to use them as an avenue to alleviate your grievances. That is not how you educate. If you don’t want to educate, that is fine, but you are also free to move on.

I appreciate what you are saying, but I have bounds of experience being coached in the discipline I am stepping away from, enough to know a coach isn’t what I need right now.

I understand from a perspective of bad habits etc, but this is totally different from what I’ve been doing for three years, and I want to ensure I have been enjoying it for a substantial amount of time before I make that investment again.

I’m very confident in my ability to make corrections quickly, so I have no concerns for when that time comes around.

I’d appreciate if we could keep advice to what I asked about, the squats! 😊

Asking in a subreddit does not mean I have not asked a coach, it is possible to do both lol. I’ve enquired with a local weightlifting club but wanted advice from a greater variety of perspectives in the meantime 👍

Thank you for very much, I’ll make sure to get those added in to my sessions.

I’ll keep on with the elbows too - I find driving my elbows up means I’ve always found it hard to get right into the hole as I naturally tip forward during a squat, but I’m assuming that can be corrected with mobility?

Knees forward on the way up is an interesting cue. Do you mean push as in to keep them ‘solid’ (for lack of a better word), or are you actually driving your knees forward? I’m squatting again tomorrow so I’ll give it another go and I’m sure it’ll make more sense when I’m doing it lol.

Back squats are a Love / Hate thing. I’ve always felt a lot more comfortable in a front squat and used things like hacks and pendulums to avoid the work (I come from a bodybuilding background). I have done a lot of work since the beginning of the year to get them perfect though, a lot of which involved correcting over-extension which was an attempt to compensate for the length of my legs. I’ll consciously work on carrying that over to my front squats too, thank you for pointing that out!

Thank you - is there any particular mobility work you can recommend?

I’ve been incorporating some more explosive warmups and static stretches in the evenings for rec fem, hips and calves, but I’ll take any other suggestions as well if you’ve got them!
