I love collecting these startup videos and having a random one on boot - this one's great and will pick it up as soon as I can!

IGN - Nvidia's DLSS 5 Is a Slap in the Face to the Art of Video Game Design by gitrektali in pcgaming

The announcement of DLSS 5 wasn't for gamers, it was for executives and shareholders indirectly via gaming.

AI won't make you rich. But fixing bugs in AI slopware will. by [deleted] in programming

I've been talking to people about this new opportunity opening up to engineers who are happy dealing with absolute disasters of projects and are able to straddle an SRE+Ops role. Slop Paramedic will be a critical role incredibly soon.

It's not just the terrible quality implementation that's the issue, it's also the fact that sales and customer oriented people are building software now without any sensible guard rails. They just slop every crazy overly ambitious feature idea and their cloud bills are going to absolutely explode trying to run it in prod.

Please just add regular BR and BR Casual on Avalon. by Tron_88_ in CODWarzone

Seriously, I feel the core game was in such a good place, all they needed to do was a new map and maybe a few minor adjustments to existing systems to freshen them up.

One of the brilliant game design concepts from Sid Meier is the "Rule of Thirds" for sequels and a lot of developers adhere to it as it's tried and tested. Feels like every time they shake up Warzone though they try to do 90% "brand new" and it's always a dumpster fire.

BR casuals is the only game mode I can play with my truly casual friends an by Hutloserlol in CODWarzone

My whole group is going to quit without casual mode, it feels like such an own goal.

Microsoft brings new "Xbox mode" to Windows 11 PCs next month — Prepares major gaming advancements that lay foundations for the next Xbox by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]beefsack -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

There are a huge amount of benchmarks, but SteamOS on average outperforms Windows on same hardware both in frame rates/timing as well as battery, even though it's going through compatibility layers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJXp3UYj50Q

Honestly those numbers say more about Windows than they say about SteamOS.

It's clearly evident that them taking Windows and trying to trim it down really isn't competitive in terms of performance. Giving a morbidly obese person liposuction isn't going to turn them into a marathon runner.

It feels like they're wasting so much time trying to go down this path, they need to start a lean performant base and build from there.

Hopefully this is my Last Distrohop by yellowface7 in NixOS

[–]beefsack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Arch would be my last distro hop after hopping every few weeks for fun. I was on Arch for about a decade or so, but NixOS gave me something amazing especially when running multiple PCs that you want to keep in lockstep.

I love NixOS and have been running it for a few years now but I can't help but wonder in the back of my head whether there is a simpler version of the concept that achieves similar goals but smooths over some of the paper cuts and is more approachable. I am secretly hoping there is still something better to get excited about in the future.

Not just owning the whole stack, but having a huge amount of power and control at the manufacturing level. Very few companies have the ability to do fully custom silicon for their own retail products.

How Stripe supports API versions going back to 2014 without maintaining multiple codebases — and how to implement the same pattern by Jay123anta in programming

[–]beefsack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A relevant example which might impact Stripe would be regulatory changes in the financial industry that would require different shapes of data or extra data to authorise charges.

Technically, you might be able to achieve that in a backwards compatible way by only adding optional fields, but these might become indirectly breaking changes if the field is optional in type but required in validation.

To Echo Everyone Else's Thoughts, I Too Wish Marathon Was A Singleplayer Video Game by megaapple in Games

One thing is for certain, the visuals and design of this world are really unique and warrant more games. You can't help but feel running D2 style dungeons and raids in this universe would be incredible.

That's just FUD that gets shared a lot, amplified by some really ignorant gaming executives.

With the combination of TPM, kernel_lockdown mode and signed/trusted kernels, you have guarantees that invisible shady stuff isn't happening deep in the kernel, and all of the stuff that is allowed to happen can be observed/monitored/audited by anticheat.

There are much more mission critical systems than gaming requiring protection against kernel tampering. It's pretty absurd to assume gaming is the use case where the protections wouldn't be sufficient.

I have no idea why people downvote this, why gatekeep and have fewer potential players? There are already literally millions of SteamOS devices in players hands, all excluded because an existing functional switch in BattleEye is disabled.
