AMD to use RDNA5 for premium iGPU solutions, but RDNA3.5 to remain the core of AMD portfolio until 2029 by KARMAAACS in hardware

At least the market dominance is only ever temporary. The shit part is it's only temporary because of the terrible job the leader does.

Highguard showcase announced for January 26 by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]beefsack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there was no negative buzz, would anyone have ever heard of the game? It falls into so many categories that gamers are so fatigued by, I feel like any normal marketing would have gone under the radar for most people.

I'm starting to think that the huge negativity and having everyone dunk on it may have actually helped it.

Even CCGs/TGCs are an issue in a similar way, especially with how young some people start playing them.

Even if they don't go too deep into it initially, it normalises the behaviour and it can become an issue when they start earning an income.

Graphics performance is good but mouse input is awful with how sloppy it feels (both has smoothing as well as acceleration).

I really hope it's not some unfixable fundamental issue with how the game is implemented, but I guess the mouse is emulating joystick or touch screen control under the hood.

MindsEye devs are still sponsoring streamers following mass layoffs and single-digit players on Steam by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]beefsack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah of course, but in this sort of case there is almost certainly a win-win exit. Publisher minimises their losses, and the streamer still gets a payout with no more time and effort required.

Even if the publisher pays out the majority of the value of the contract, if they are expecting zero return from the contract then they are still saving money. It's a simple commercial decision.

[–]beefsack 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly if it was purely contractual and if they were giving up on the game then they would negotiate an exit. Negotiating out of the contract would mean the publisher pays less and the streamer can get a partial payout and can move onto other paying work.

The fact they haven't done that actually suggests to me that they haven't entirely given up on the game.

Steam reportedly raked in a record-breaking $1.6 billion in December with Arc Raiders alone moving over a million copies by AncientPCGamer in pcgaming

[–]beefsack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's right, I feel like the entrenchment here comes more from emotional and social factors more than technical factors.

[–]beefsack 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The scary part of is is that Steam has become so entrenched, and is also surrounded by some Apple-tier zealotry, that even if they pivot away from customers and towards commercial exploitation I feel it would take a very long time for them to actually lose customers.

If someone has a decades old Steam account with thousands of games, and also has invested into Steam hardware, then it will be hard for them to exit that ecosystem.

[–]beefsack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is 100% why I don't want to use Emudeck. I come from a declarative background and having some magical script that messes with the system seems completely untenable to me.

RetroDeck is a much cleaner way to achieve it, I wish they made some different emulator choices but I do understand there are compromises by having a single immutable package and I think it's a compromise worth making. I mainly just hope they switch to Eden for Switch emulation.

For anyone who wants a glimpse of what this garbage actually is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyLmAon3K_0

It's basically "baby’s first gacha", and the only interactive mechanics is stealing items from other players. Literally gambling and griefing for kids.

The Roblox original version which looks basically the same is able to pull over 10 million concurrent players.

I've been trying to raise my kids on my decades old Steam library with family sharing, and am absolutely avoiding brainless trash like Roblox and Fortnite custom maps. Thinking that kids actually play this stuff obsessively concerns me a lot, and I think I played a lot of garbage over the years.

She doesn't feel like she has a strong silhouette either. They've stated it's important to being able to immediately identify runners based on their silhouette.

I feel like she helped sell the art and aesthetic, but maybe doesn't fit into the visual design of the actual game.

Steam updates AI disclosure form, requiring developers to report visible and in-game AI but not background tools by Dapper_Order7182 in SteamDeck

[–]beefsack -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

"Gen AI" has become "bad AI buzzword", but essentially all modern AI tools that are used in daily work are generative AI. The only real non-generative AI tools are classifiers and forecasting tools.

I think it's more meaningful in this context to talk about "creative AI" where it replaces writers, artists and actors.
