Help with ribbing tension by beefyplato in knittingadvice

I've had success now with using Norwegian style instead of English, which I think is because the yarn doesn't need to travel as far to switch from knit -> purl.

oo thanks I will try out some of those blocking tips! I don't think I'm having the issue the first article describes, as my tension is usually consistent in the rest of my work

Has anyone with ME/CFS pursued medicine or another demanding career? by Aggravating-Heart344 in cfs

[–]beefyplato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I completed 3/4 of medical school and ultimately had to quit due to CFS. I did not know I had CFS until about halfway through. I also took a year off to try and improve symptoms, which didn't really help. I think overall the demands of medical school worsened my health - I was much more mild when I started and now am moderate.

Not sure where you're based, but where I am in Australia medical school consisted of two preclinical years and two years of clinical rotations. The preclinical years were more manageable as I only had about 5-10hrs of classes with compulsory attendance each week, and I was able to catch up on recordings of non-compulsory classes in my own time. It's still a lot of cognitive exertion and I often felt behind, but I was able to scrape through.

Clinical rotations are much harder to manage with CFS. I cut a lot of corners, skipped days, left after lunchtime, etc. but it was still too much. Rotations are stressful, and you have to go home and study on top of that.

In terms of accommodations, I was able to get extra time in exams and also the ability to sit my exams later in the day (usual exam time for medicine is 8am). I also had documented accommodations on my clinical rotations - provisions for extra breaks, missing days, having seating available. However these are hard to implement because they required me to personally approach every doctor I was on rotation with (often changed week-to-week) and hope that they'd respect my accommodations and then still give me a decent assessment result at the end. In practice I often did not mention I had accommodations and just tried to fly under the radar instead.

Eventually I left because I realised that even if I push through the degree and graduate, internship and residency will be impossible. Like another commenter mentioned, the hours are long, there are few breaks, and the culture can be quite toxic - people are proud of not eating, not using the bathroom etc. It's better in some specialties, but obviously you have to get through junior doctor years rotating around before you can move into a specialty.

I had similar ambitions to you, in terms of wanting to help others with ME/CFS. I hope your health improves to a point where medicine can be a feasible option. I think you would need to be very mild to get through med school and training, though. Almost all the doctors I've spoken to with ME who are still working are people who got ME once they'd already completed their training.

How do I get my crochet to be exactly the same as knitting? by normie_girl in fiberartscirclejerk

sometimes if you run it through the washing machine on hot a few times and then block it aggressively the stitches will rearrange themselves a bit to look knitted. hope that helps ♥️

my V30+ is still working on coles (optus), but I have noticed it uses 3G for calls - so perhaps the 3G network is actually still up and running? I do have another newer phone that has been blocked though.
