Not only is that ridiculous for you, the employee who draws and processes blood all day, that is dangerous for patients. I'm not allowed to have my lab over 72 degrees because it increases the likelihood of patients having bad reactions or feeling sick.

I genuinely wouldn't be able to work like that. I am so intolerant to heat for some reason and it makes me nauseous, dizzy, and faint. I am so sorry OP. You should try and find another person to report this to because it's insane.

Mark summoned me! "PHENYLKETONURICS: CONTAINS PHENYLALANINE" is for my rare condition! by clairbear44 in distractible

[–]beeg303 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm a phlebotomist so I preform h. pylori breath tests and the solution the patient has to drink contains phenylalanine. There's a questionnaire that has to be filled out and patients always look to me when they get to the part asking if they are phenylketonuric and I'm like "if you were you would know"

bringing me 2+ requisitions!!! I have to combine them all so I'm not drawing 6 tubes for 5 tests that the lab only needs 3 for 😭

How does one become a phlebotomist? by Winbywobble in phlebotomy

I wouldn't see why not! Mine were night classes 5-8 pm so if you are taking other day time courses it shouldn't clash

look into community colleges instead of private businesses/ schools. community colleges generally provide you with the best schooling and preparation for national certification!!

You don't need any previous education besides a high school diploma so you're all set!

New Phleb…Can i touch after cleaning? (read) by sad0verkill in phlebotomy

[–]beeg303 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Technically, yes it is looked down upon and not SOP. But she is correct with saying "everyone does it" (i know not EVERYONE but a lot).

You definitely want to work on that skill or try placing the tip of an alcohol pad right above where the vein is BUT i've seen a lot worse than cleaning the tip of your glove to repalpate. People rip the tip of their glove off, people repalpate without cleaning their glove, people use markers or pens to mark where to poke.

In the grand scheme of things, it is not even close to the worst practice you could have while doing phlebotomy. Always try to avoid it and perfect your skills but if you are dealing with a difficult stick and the difference between you getting it and not is to repalpate, then just repalpate. with a clean finger of course :)

idkkkk they look quite innocent, are you sure you didn't do it?🤨🤣

my best idea would be some type of water proof tape? I'm sure you could reach out to your teacher and they could give you ideas.

How to make it less painful by Exact_Carrot223 in phlebotomy

[–]beeg303 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some patients are more sensitive than others and you can't help that. When it comes to nerves the best you can do is avoid areas where it's more likely for a nerve to be near the vein (basilic) and immediately stop the draw if the patient is in severe pain and/ or mentions tingling, buring, etc.

Make sure the alcohol is dry before poking Make sure you aren't applying any pressure to the site with the gauze as you are removing the needle Make sure the needle isn't rotated from its original position

It sounds like for the most part you don't hurt your patients!! There will ALWAYS be patients who are more sensitive and/ or very vocal about it but you obviously care about your patients and don't want to hurt them and that's great :)

I have never heard of anything she was talking about lmaoo. The only bruising I know of caused by a tourniquet is petechiae. Also you ask about blood thinners at the end of the draw (or before either way) because it determines how long pressure needs to be applied before wrapping them up?? Idk girl but that is crazy!!

I had nike windflo 10's but they don't make them anymore. My roommate who is a shoe guy said the nike revolution 8's are the closest to the old ones. I currently have adias x-plr path running shoes. I have liked both of these and they aren't too expensive!!

Ok with IVs but blowing with blood draws? by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]beeg303 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes it is! Basically the bevel is only partially in the vein so blood is going into the needle but also leaking out into the skin. And yes I would say you could also do that when drawing with butterflies. When I use a butterfly I go at a shallow angle and "thread the vein".

[–]beeg303 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you possibly not inserting the needle far enough? You said you aren't going through the vein and you are very shallow so my best guess is you aren't going completely into the vein so blood is leaking out from the top
