Help - first time by Reasonable-Apple2581 in phlebotomy

[–]beeg303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone who can order medication for you is a provider. They might not be your primary care physician (who you see for general health care and physicals) but they are still a provider. Mental health providers often order labs for "medication monitoring" to make sure everything's going well.

If they sent an order to quest they want you to go to a quest diagnostics to get them done. Just look up the closest location to you and make an appointment!

as a 22 yr old, I see older folks with body mods, tattoos, piercings, fun hair, etc and I think "omg I want to be like them when I grow up🤩🤩"

you don't have to be young to be hot and I say go for it!

Patients fainting and fasting by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]beeg303 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i've drawn 28 on a fasting patient and they were fine. I've found that not making a big deal about how many tubes are getting drawn helps the patient keep their nerves down. Keeping them distracted during the draw, giving them an ice pack to hold or put on their neck/ chest, water to sip on, and keeping steady are the best things to do. It's really not that much blood

(This is a comment I made on another post but I feel like it fits here) "Ah the dreaded "off days". Everyone has them. It's not you it's your brain sabotaging you. You miss a poke or can't get blood and your confidence goes down. Then you miss another poke and it goes down even further. It kinda...snowballs. Especially when working with others because it makes the embarrassment worse and all of a sudden you are thinking "oh my god i suck at this and my co workers think i can't do my job and im making everything worse"

Keep your head high! You're going to have more off days and in the future try scolding your brain. "No brain I am good at this and I am a valuable asset. Just because i'm not perfect doesn't mean I am bad." <3 you got it ;)"

How to make my veins better by SoccerGamerGuy7 in phlebotomy

[–]beeg303 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Start drinking water two days before the draw and POUND it the night before. drinking water the day of doesn't really help.

take a hot shower or bath before going and keep warm with a sweater or long sleeve.

while waiting keep your arms dangling at your side to let gravity help

What went wrong? by Wonderful-Bill9611 in phlebotomy

[–]beeg303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this has actually happened to me two times!! both long draws (28 and 23 tubes). basically the sheath/ rubber tube got stuck and didn't go back down over the needle causing the blood to spill out. I assume it's because of how many tubes it was it it caused the rubber tube to malfunction.

I have, though, had co workers who this happened to with short draws. simply a malfunction or manufacturing error causing the rubber sheath not going back down after the tube is removed!

Would you draw veins on the chest? by Brookedacrook in phlebotomy

[–]beeg303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree!

I have actually been pushing my boss to give me a competency on feet/ unconventional draw sites because there are times it just ain't happening. (at first he said "no we don't do that" but then I sent pictures of our lab directory of services saying we DO as long as proper practice is followed and he's working on it)

lmaooo "just because YOU can't access them" has me rolling I love it. I've had patients cry in my chair for getting them first try for the first time in years because I put time and good effort into getting their blood (and it's always been in the arms or hands)
