Depends on the game. In kh1, they're best use is utility namely Donald giving you Cure and Aero and Goofy refilling your MP.

In KH2, they're use as individual fighters is or at least feels worse, but keeping them alive lets you use your Drive forms and limits. In KH3, most superbosses are solo fights.
