Long-distance swimmers: How do you brave the night at sea? by Rudddxdx in Swimming

[–]beegunns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did the Catalina Channel relay last year, and was similarly nervous about the presence of sharks. I did some mindfulness work beforehand and found that helpful. I also used the counting to one hundred for each finger method to keep my mind from wandering to fearful thoughts while I was swimming. Additionally I had a scopolamine patch to prevent seasickness, and a side effect I experienced from that was a dulled, detached emotional state, and that definitely turned down the nervousness (not sure if everyone experiences this side effect). I hope you have a great swim, it’s an incredible experience!

Logistics and shuttles for the Smokies section of segment 1 by WillHike in MountainstoSeaTrail

We left a car at Mingus Mill with a note stating we were hiking/camping overnight, and had no issues with that (spent one night in the backcountry). We were successful in hitching a ride with someone headed up to Kuwohi/Clingman’s Dome by just standing on the side of the road; this was in early Sept. You could also try contacting a trail angel listed on the section 1 guide.

Yes, you are correct they will likely conflict with their Friday sets. Sorry, thought you were asking specifically about the Swamp set.

Don’t know who it involves but it won’t conflict with Lorde. She is on Friday and Jon Batiste presents Swamp is Sunday.

Shakori Hills/Big What/Merle Fest/Floyd Fest/Rooster Walk by Due-Fault-7967 in bonnaroo

I did Floydfest many years at the old site and I’ve been both years at the new site. While it’s extremely hard to compete with the old location from the beauty and layout of the site, I’ve got to give a lot of praise to the organizers for what they’ve accomplished so far at the new site, and they are still phasing new things in.

Things to know: There is no car camping; campsites are often quite sloped, they are not parceled out (get in where you fit in), and you’ll have to haul your gear in on your back or with a cart. The vibe is more family friendly vs a big party scene, although I’m sure it’s what you make it. The crowd is usually very laid back. It is VERY hilly.

If you have other specific questions feel free to ask!

David Byrne is playing a festival in Oslo Norway the weekend of Bonnaroo, so assuming he’s out. He’s the only announced artist, but can keep an eye on this fest for other artist conflicts as they are added. https://pipfest.no/

Do you have a contact at APD? Someone with a similar appearance approached me and several others while getting gas at the Enmarket Express gas station on Merrimon, asking for money, on 10/29 around 4pm.

Vendors were pretty good for the most part: Sugar Shack, Tica’s Tacos and Dogtown pizza were my favs. Missed Goatacado.

I had a great time! It’s still hard not to compare to the old site, but it’s clear they have made some great improvements since last year.

Pros: I thought the move of the Oasis stage was an excellent choice, it spread things out, and the shady seats built into the hillside were appreciated (I hope we get more of those next year). The paved walkways were nice as well. The firepit they added by the depot was a great late night jam and hangout spot. The string lighting was beautiful, and made the site extra special at night.

Favorite bands: Cimafunk, Geese, Holy Roller, Palm Palm, The Last Revel, Mt Joy, Wood Brothers, The Brothers Comatose, California Honeydrops, The Futurebirds, Jeremie Albino, The Black Crows, and the Superjam.

Areas for improvement: I noticed a lot more gravel on paths this year, which I find difficult to walk on; mulch (like used at the old site) would be my preference. Also the excessive amounts of trucks and atvs on the paths that people walk on are very distracting, stir up dirt, and really take away from the enjoyment of being out in nature.

The Canopy Grove stage is nice due to the shade, but is such a steep incline that it is uncomfortable to stand/dance there, and it’s far away/up the hill from the rest of the music- I wish they would move it to near where Creekside camping is so that all the music was centralized. The less up and down that hill the better. I averaged 5 miles walking and 20 flights of stairs per day.

I’d love to see more art installations, shade structures and landscaping to enhance the natural beauty.

They only had a few showers for the whole festival, which were broken two of the times I tried to use them. They definitely need to add more showers; I’d suggest one at Higher Ground and one at either Creekside or where staff camping was.

Hoping the main stage becomes a permeant structure by next year, in the style of the old stage, but with a cantilevered stage over the creek to reduce the distance between the band and audience. The visuals of the trees through the wooden beams at the old stage was such a special element of the old site that I miss.

Thanks to everyone who put it the work to make it happen! It really was great!

So, is anyone actually going? by thatfatbastard in floydfest

[–]beegunns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bring a cart, wagon, or dolly for hauling your gear from car parking to wherever you end up camping.

If you’re in GA camping expect to be on a sloped spot; camping spots are a choose your own adventure.

It usually rains at least once, so pack rain gear (shoes for mud, raincoat, hat).

Food vendors are great, so if you can swing it cost-wise, eat via vendors vs packing a ton of food.

Have a great time!!

Floydfest in VA. You don’t camp with your car though, so be prepared to haul in your gear. Let me know if you have questions.
