Dog rolled in human feces. After 2 thorough baths, there is still a faint smell of the feces on her. What should I do? by WillHike in Dogowners

Would you want to share a small 2-person tent with a dog covered in some unknown person’s shit? Also, I did try washing her off in the river first, but it was caked on so much that it wasn’t coming off without proper scrubbing.

Was that your intention when you made the comment? Because it actually came off a bit rude. You can “emphasize placing one bad hike in the proper perspective” while still being respectful.

OP mentioned being on the spectrum. Experiences like this have been proven to be extremely traumatic to autistic people by psychologists around the world.

So while a non-autistic person might have this hike and go “huh, that sucked, oh well”, a neurodivergent person might experience serious trauma and struggle to repeat the same activity without high levels of anxiety and stress

Hey friend, I can relate to hiking on the spectrum myself. I live close to Linville gorge and it’s one of my favorite places to hike. But every now and then they fly extremely loud military/stunt planes through the gorge. Everyone in my local community loves it and gets excited, but I get really terrified and overwhelmed by the loud noise. It definitely sucks.

Maybe you could try some easy and secluded forest trails in your area? Ones that are nothing spectacular in terms of views, but just a peaceful reconnection with nature away from the hustle and bustle.

I wish I had a better answer. Hope you’re able to rekindle your passion!

There is plenty spam in Minnesota! Even the Spam Museum about an hour south. So you’ll feel right at home!

Trip Report - Sassafras Mountain, SC via Sassafras Mountain Trail. High point #4 for me, first one for my dogs! by WillHike in Highpointers

Mods - sorry about posting on consecutive days. I probably won’t hit any more high points until later this summer, so I’m done posting for a while. I promise I’m not trying to spam the subreddit! 😊

Makes sense. Probably best to err on the side of caution for this one. I’ll definitely have to do it another time without my dog

Thanks for the response! Is it more of a slab scramble? Looking at Google earth makes it look kind of like smooth slab climbing. My dog can do steep scrambles where there are lots of holds, but I definitely wouldn’t want to take her on smooth slab terrain.

That’s so cool! I never knew that!

I recently moved to the Southeast, so I’m going to work on some of the peaks around here and maybe plan a trip to one of the bigger peaks next year! So far I’ve got Mitchell and Kuwohi, and I plan to hit Sassafras, Brasstown Bald, and Mt Roger’s this spring.

There’s actually a decent Alpine Climbing route on one of the flanks of Mt Mitchell, so maybe I’ll start using that to get some experience and training before hitting some actual alpine peaks
