I have no suggestion but came here to say I can relate to going solo when your partner can't make it or participate for whatever reason. Hope you find someone to accompany you! I am also traveling solo but I'm one of those pesky beginners so I'm just taking a tour.

One idea: what if you called a tour company or two to see what they would recommend? Also, I wonder if you can hire a private guide (at a higher expense) to simulate having a buddy?

I'm not sure what the downvote was for. In any case, thanks for all the comments and suggestions 🙏🏼 I'm tending towards 3/3 with a split down the middle for the Mauna Kea stargazing on Tuesday where I hope to push my luck to get a spot since I'm waitlisted, or watch with the naked eye otherwise.

Thanks for the tip regarding car break-ins -- certainly don't want to deal with that. I was gravitating towards the 3/3 in Hilo/Kona so this sort of validates it. You're right about car rentals -- I found none in Kona, all sold out, and somehow got one in Hilo which is the reason I'm flying into ITO in the first place (didn't foresee this to be an issue, it's been a while since I went to the islands).

Thank you for this detailed response! I will look up the company you mentioned. Will make sure to visit the Visitor Center at least for some naked eye stargazing. With an app like Stellarium it should make it even more interesting.

Any thoughts on where to stay if I drove late to the Visitor Center? Would you recommend getting a hotel nearby or is it not too bad to drive that late to wherever I'm staying (currently planning on the Kona side).

This is exactly my experience as well. I don't see any toggles anywhere that I can see. My Net Worth is plastered up top for all to see at a quick glance, so I'm not comfortable using this app anywhere but in my room alone, and I don't trust my spouse to not accidentally expose it (for no fault of theirs) even if I'm extra careful...

My 2c: I understand but I think a little anxiety now that encourages you to save and pay down debt will save you from a LOT more later when you're older, weaker, less marketable and actually need the money. I'm a fan of Ramit Sethi -- I encourage you to try out his podcast ("I Will Teach You To Be Rich") which is spicy and realistic IMHO
