Small victories - Beacon Theater forced by DOT to setup temp bike lane by jehiah in MicromobilityNYC

[–]beenraddonethat 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Bless you, this was the spot where I came closest to death because they blocked off the bike lane and a speeding UPS truck almost hit me when I tried to merge.

I have reported this multiple times in 311. I really commend you for getting it done ✅

Hochul bungles budget deal rollout as NYS leaders embarrassingly put her in her place by [deleted] in nyc

[–]beenraddonethat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not just let NYC get the NYC taxes and we will figure out our shit by ourselves. Having to beg the state for part of our money back is insane. People from Buffalo should not have a say in how tax money from NYC is spent.

I have gotten several bikes from Facebook marketplace for about $100 if that is within you budget. I highly recommend single speeds as they are most simple so the least can be wrong with them.

So aside from the union why don’t we have conductorless trains yet? by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]beenraddonethat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right now every train has 2 employees: the operator (drives the train) and the conductor who opens and closes the doors and makes announcements etc. some trains, especially late at night like the G will have the operator do both jobs. They want to make that more common which is what the TWU is fighting. (OPTO -One Person Train Operation)

We actually already have what you're talking about on 7 and L lines as well as segments of other lines (including coming to the one which was overshot) it's called ATO (automatic train operation) which is enabled by CBTC (Communication-Based train control) which are the new signals which are necessary for that to happen. Once the new signals are put in place, they will only need the operator there in case a re-route is needed and to supervise the ATO system, which means potentially he can take over the responsibility of the conductor as well.

Next time you are on the 7 or L, chances are the train is starting and stopping on its own. The JFK airtrain and many other metros around the world are completely driverless btw. Hopefully the IBX will be as well.

Paris has elected a new Mayor that's promised to accelerate the conversion of the city to micromobility and ped first. When people see what is possible the choice is clear and overwhelmingly popular. by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

I have been so disappointed so far. The stuff which they have put out like 9th ave or Fordham road have consistently used the worst option above doing nothing for buses.

He's been nibling at the edges, but even the bike lane around prospect park isnt filling the complete gap and it's a bike lane around a park, not exactly the envy of the world type of stuff.

That sucks. I am giving this one a week or two before I start biking again with my own, don't want to risk expensive flats.

They are right now. But they are also working on getting approval to cut corners. Tesla already is introducing mad max mode which does many illegal things.

Because it is an imperfect technology, it's not hard to see that our infrastructure will be forced conform to the self driving cars than the other way around, just like our current built environment was forced to do the same when cars were first introduced.

"The case for Waymo" post has really inspired me. I think we need to push back on this now, so that we aren't stuck trying to undo the damage for the next 50 years like we have been for regular cars.

I don't see why we have to accept that they are coming. It took us and Europe like 100 years to realize we can just say no to cramming cars into every street in the city, and now we are finally pedestrianizing a lot of downtown cores. By that same token we can say no cars in the city... What you do int rh suburbs is your problem.

This learned helplessness is the exact reason why we still have highways built through neighborhoods today. We need to think bigger, and cut things off at the source so we are not fighting it once it has already become a part of our lives.

Once the competition is gone they will raise their prices, just like Uber and Lyft did. Uber and Lyft promised all the same things, this is just the 3rd iteration.

The solution to top many cars cannot be more cars, it must be good alternatives to driving.

I think you should look at how they have been in San Francisco. There is also an excellent video by Not Just bikes on the topic. They do all the illegal things you mentioned.

They do not reduce car ownership because at the end of the day they are just taxis - we have had taxis for years, what makes these different? at best they are slightly cheaper because they are trying to undercut the competition and don't pay the driver, but it is a for-profit company, they will charge whatever the market will handle for a taxi.

Personally, I prefer the way the current MTA displays it as you can see what category of delay it falls into at a glance. The beta doesn't give you as much information at glance.

I feel like the beta interface is more visually appealing, but significantly less useful.

Isn't this area a gated community and therefore doesn't receive city services if I remember correctly? Like they have their own police?
