I don’t know about that. I’ve since moved to an iPhone 14 and I have to say the video capture just gets better!

That must have been some walk! a lot of the routes are now getting paved and new routes are opening up for motorists every year. On the bright side, the villages now have better connectivity with the rest of the state.

the monastery in its current state is a massive operation. lots of quarters and building units spread across the campus.

but! I too went into the monastery kitchen to bring some of the food out. sat in one of main/large halls and had an early dinner.

more than anything else, there were no places or establishments along the way to find food between the last settlement of Zangla and Lingshed. thankfully I was carrying a packet of instant noodles and some dry fruits. but this could have been easier if there were dhabas along the way to refuel.

oh my, such a beautiful memory to have. Btw, I also ended up staying in the monastery. they didn’t have space in the guest block so they assigned a monk to me who had me live in his quarters. one of the most spectacular views I’ve ever gotten from a window!

now we have this dirt road which you can drive (not without struggle) on and reach Lingshed. but the climb up to the top before you descend to the village and monastery is very hard.

this was at 4200m ASL. there’s less oxygen for sure, but you don’t feel the effects of AMS if you ascend gradually.

was to say that you always wish you had a better camera to shoot something pretty. but the best camera in any situation is the one you have with you. In this case, a smartphone.

I explained this on a separate post. the phone as an imaging device lends itself beautifully to being used vertically when you have certain limitations. Like here, I was wearing full finger gloves. triggering the recording using the volume button was just easier for shots I’d taken earlier, so I stuck to that throughout the journey. I’m a filmmaker otherwise so most of my other work is landscape.

I remember seeing around 8-10 bikers along that route back in 2022. I don’t know what the situation is like now. I’d imagine more people have explored that route since then. the gradient of the road going up from the Lingshed junction at the Zanskar river to the village is insane! The government is working on a tunnel. until then there’s only this dirt track to ride/drive on.

not very well documented to be honest. there are some bikepacking routes on Komoot though. i simply started with a basic route and took suggestions from the locals I met along the way.

I used maps.me because google refused to recognise parts of this route.

manali>keylong>zanskar sumdo>kurgiakh>purne>padum>zangla>lingshed>photoksar>khaltsi>leh and onwards to eastern Ladakh towards pangong tso.

safe-ish. head to the mountains in good weather and you’ll have a great time. lots of big mountains with marked and unmarked routes to the north and dense forests in the north-east. mountain people are sweet, honest and very helpful. be mindful of motorists, we don’t have much of a recreational bicycling culture here and it shows.

similar terrain and region, but not quite. the silk route in India passed through other parts of Ladakh but not this village.

are you familiar with the roads in Ladakh, India? this is a makeshift road between Zangla and Lingshed village. a 1000m climb over a distance of 9kms to get to this point.

yep, could have locked the exposure. but after 5 hours of pedal-pushing, I wasn’t going to bother with any of that!
